    Scheutzen 1.5 powder

I've used 1.5F, even Fg in my 20 gauge without a problem. Go for it!

    Dumping Ballistol and Gun Oil

I clean with water or if I am feely fancy maybe water and a drop of dawn dish soap. I lube with tallow, bear, deer, mink, hog whatever I have on hand. I use ballistol, bought by the gallon, on small stuff where I require liquid lube. The only other oil I use is type f transmission fluid for long...

Ramrod UNstucker installed at our range

Most of my ramrods have tooth imprints on the end, that gizmo looks way easier. I bet 9 out of 10 dentists approve as well.

    How much is too much.

My gpr weighs 9.5 lbs, my earlyish styled longrifle weighs 9.5 lbs. Both are .54 and flintlock. I'd rather carry the longrifle if walking a lot because it seems lighter. I know they're the same weight so it must be the balance.

    English flints

English or French from TOW are both winners in my guns. A couple years ago a buddy gave me 2 coffee cans full of the black English. He got them in bulk somewhere for cheap.

    period correct bags

I started carrying one of those small bags to see if it was practical. In the bag I usually have 5 or so each loose round balls and lubed patches, a powder measure and a small flint wallet. The flint wallet has a couple flints, a turnscrew, jag and a couple cleaning patches. My vent pick hangs...

    Muzzleloader Duck Hunt Success

Great pics, sounds like a perfect hunt! Coot breast, salt and pepper, fried in butter for 1 minute on each side. Served on wonder bread with Velveeta cheese. Tastes great when cooked in the blind on a cold morning hunt. Way better than merganser. However I ate army food for 22+ years and liked it!

    The experiment.

Great hunt and good looking food. I'll have to give the recipe a try. I just picked up 70+ lbs of goose snack sticks from our local processor, almost too good! We just drop off clean breast and he does the work. Our bag limit is 5 geese per day and we do our best to fill it. We eat a lot of...

    Using Tallow

I've been using deer tallow, bear grease/oil and hog lard for patch lube and leather for a long time. All home processed. I've never had any problems with it, other than the dogs licking my boots when they're freshly greased.

How do you store your flints?

I keep a couple in each shooting pouch and have a quart jar full of each size I use on my workbench. If I ever use those up I have at least a coffee can or 2 of each size in the pole barn with some spare powder and balls. I hate running out of stuff!

    Squirrel hunts over the weekend

Nice shooting! I hope to get out after them once our deer season wraps up.

    Powder loads for smoothie

My 20 gauge fusil de chasse shoots great with 110gr FFg + .015 patch + .595 ball. It also shoots just as great with either 90gr FFg or 85gr FFFg + over powder wad + .015 patch + .595 ball However if I take the op was out it's not good. After a lot of experiments and Chrono tests I finally...

    Feeling like a Drugstore Cowboy

Welcome to the slippery slope of flintlocks. Don't try to stop the inevitable, just enjoy the ride. Soon you'll be trying to decide what's next a smoothbore or a squirrel rifle. All while the non flintlocks sit unused, collecting dust. Ask me how I know 🤣

Best muzzleloader for an older guy

My 42" barrelled fusil de chasse is my easiest carrying muzzleloader. Light to carry, wide butt plate and very well balanced. You might give one or a similar Fowler a try.

Referring to a Smoothbore as a Smoothie

I mostly shoot my smoothie on my backyard range, because it's easy. When I do take her or any of the my other rocklocks to the public range I usually draw a crowd. I've let a lot of others take their first muzzleloader shots with my guns. I don't care what we call them, how we dress when we...

    .58 cal Early gun build

That's a great looking rifle! You're ready for the next bear that wanders by. What did you use to get that look on the lock and barrel?
