    tin foil to hold shot???

Be Careful using GunCotton in muzzle loading firearms, as it is a type of smokeless propellent! Instead consider true nitrated paper, made by soaking the papers in a saturated solution of KNO3 (potassium nitrate aka saltpeter). After soaking a few hours, lay it Flat to dry evenly before using...

    Carbines

I found a page with period paintings illustrating the little carbine championed by the Cavalry officer Lord Henry Paget. It had a curved bar for the sliding ring used to carry on horseback. (illustrated herewith) Paget Cavalry Carbine

    My German Wheellock replica

I could never have come up with such Clever phrasing - my hair...into fresh air! My own dear wife complains of the glare from this bald head at times; I must inform her that my missing hair merely became more environmentally friendly.

    A Cartridge Box for 'Bess

I like it! I made my first ca'tridge box out of an old binocular case with a 4x4 drilled out block holding the cartridges. Fully functional and the deer and antelope seemed not to care either way. (of course I'm never going to be a reenactor with it)

    Carbines

I don't know how knowledgeable I can be but here's what I have seen. The earlier carbines were often called musketoons. Aside from the various shortened muskets in the American Revolution, the British army had a Paget carbine in the very early years of the 1800s. There was also a French 1777...

    Anyone Know?

I liked the price, but from looking at the stock layout, it appears to have quite a bit of drop at the heel for a smoothbore. If that's the case you may experience increased felt recoil, It could also result in vertical muzzle climb (or flip). Depending on how or whether your cheek welds...

.375 Caliber Smooth Bore Rifle.....Possible?.....Accuracy?.....Retarded Idea?

Great memories on this! I owned a percussion front-stuffer pistol equipped with a .375 smooth barrel and tried all sorts of bullets, even a Very long paper-patched .357 with its deep hollow base. Tons of fun, but all the elongated projectiles wildly varied in accuracy, and most of the time...

.375 Caliber Smooth Bore Rifle.....Possible?.....Accuracy?.....Retarded Idea?

Yeah, relining worn RIFLING in old barrels really can improve previous performance; however, unless the barrel isn't pretty bad to start with I didn't see tremendous gains. I've not tried relining a smoothie yet but also came up with the same notion of making a cheaper smootbore barrel similar...

.375 Caliber Smooth Bore Rifle.....Possible?.....Accuracy?.....Retarded Idea?

Great start! By all means do a light chamfer on the sharp muzzle. Since you're firing a 1" barrel with a smooth smallbore liner, you could possibly go heavier on the powder charge, since higher velocity sometimes helps shrink roundball groups at distance on smoothbores. Keep us posted on progress!

@64Springer - did you ever pursue this barrel build? Just curious as to how it would turn out :)

    Patterning my NWTG

You know, I get a little amused at myself on these issues. I already know that the original owners/users of the NWTG were ultimate pragmatists and they would use whatever worked; and if that material was not available then improvisation was necessay. Yet I find myself worrying about...

    Stuck Bore Brush

Glad to know that you succeeded in getting the bore completely cleared out. I always love to see the old Charleys roar back to life! Best regards in the ongoing prep and rehabilitations.

    Stuck Bore Brush

Run a well-lubricated, thin sleeve down the bore to contact the brush, then insert a hole-saw inside the sleeve, and turn/twist the saw through the brass bristles. You should the be able to clean out the bore.

    Smooth bore 38cal Kentucky Pistol

Liking AzMntman's rust removal suggestion. FWIW - many years ago I got a short 380 smoothbored percussion barrel from Dixie Gun Works and built it into a pisol. That being said, I used .356 or .357 precast balls from Hornady and Speer and they worked perfectly. What did not do well were...

    Shot Card Magazine

Love it! So handy and clever - I'd love that for 20GA too. Your execution of the design is perfect! 👌 Possible suggestion: it might load even slicker if the base was removable and had the spring attached to it with solder/epoxy, that way wads could go into the bottom of the tube without...

    My Access Heritage doglock

I put a thin coat of grease on the barrel flats, then degrease the offending area of the pan and apply a little acra glas (or J B Weld) compound to the vertical area of pan where it meets barrel. Carefully mount the lock to the gun and tighten the lockscrews. Let it harden, then pull it off and...

Chokes or no Chokes for Turkey Hunting

Well, hats off to anyone willing to tote and withstand recoil from a beastly 4 gauge. Where I live (Arizona) hunting is dis-allowed for gauges larger than 10 bore. Nowadays I am now discomfitted by firing even one barrel on my 12GA double Pedersoli, although I did ONCE try to approximate the...
