Who Hunts Reg Seasons With Their Muzzleloader?

Last year I got to go deer hunting with a friend in Georgia. I hunted during the regular season with my .45 cal Blue Ridge flintlock rifle and my double barreled 12 gauge muzzle loading CVA shotgun with dogs. I also took along my 1859 Sharps. Brought home 2 nice white tails. Old Shepherd

Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy in .36, what do I need to know?

Ernbar, Thank you for sharing the information about the small brass rod. You just helped me figure out a cheap and easy way to replace a missing front sight bead on my Howda pistol. Old Shepherd

Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy in .36, what do I need to know?

Smokerr, You must not have read where I am only cleaning up, at the least and only just deepening the V notch a 1/16 at the most. There is no need to mill any part of the hammer. Please keep in mind that this is just what I do on my Colt replicas. There are lots of different things you can do to...

Not just everyone can cut a dovetail. If you decide to go that route, practice on some scrap pipe or bar first. Then tape it on the barrel and look at where your front site has you looking. Do this on a mark on the wall about 10 feet away. It might be fine or you may now have to put in a higher...

Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy in .36, what do I need to know?

I was blessed with a well made and expensive needle file set from a dear old friend (now passed) that had been a full time gunsmith. You could use a good hacksaw blade to start. That might work very well. Then a needle file or maybe even a thin stone. With me it is an eye sight issue to get a...

Just bought a Pietta 1851 Navy in .36, what do I need to know?

Chiphasnoteeth, When I deepen the sight groove on the hammer, it doesn’t do anything to compromise the integrity of the hammer or how it strikes a nipple. It usually takes less than 1/16 of an inch. That is just squaring up the bottom of the groove to allow my eye to see more of an already short...

best out of the box pistol

I have two favorites. A Lyman Great Plains percussion pistol in .54 cal to go with my TC Hawken kit rifle. That pistol has served my well for over 30 years. The other is a Pedersoli, flint lock Kentucky pistol in .45 cal to go with Blue Ridge flint lock rifle. I have had that pistol for 18...

After you get familiar with your revolver, and begin to develop that revolver’s accuracy sweet spot. You can take a small needle file or knife edge file and slowly make a few passes in the rear sight notch of the hammer and start to moving the point of impact upward to match your point of aim...

    Carrying a pistol

For years, I carried a Colt Walker replica on a cross draw holster when I muzzle loader elk hunted. When I muzzle loader deer hunted, I carried my Ruger Old Army. This was not so much as a follow up or kill shot weapon but for Grouse and or large things that might want to hurt me. I want to take...

    The powder ran out first...

Britsmoothy, Thank you for sharing the adventure with us. I have a Beretta shotgun as well. I haven’t had any problems with mine and it shoots very well. When you shoot from a blind, do you use a range rod to reload with or the ram rod on the shotgun? Old Shepherd

    Proper powder

Try your pistol with (I am assuming you have Pyrodex RS) and work up your best accuracy load. Then take a couple 100grs of RS and carefully grind it up a little. Read Mortar and Pestle, or pop bottle and old glass dish. Not a fine powder but just about half the size of the RS granules. Just...

    Starting fires with patches

I have had patches smolder a little. If you are watching for them it can be dealt with quickly. When we used to shoot a lot and it was hot and dry, I always had an Indian Can, back pack, water fire extinguisher close by on the back of my pickup. I always had a shovel as well. The patches weren't...

My wife says I have issues ...

I believe I have stated this in another tread before. I load 28 grs. of fffg under a .440 patched round ball and my CVA Derringer is capable of hitting a 3 lb coffee can at 15 ft, easy. Accuracy is in the load that your pistol likes and your sighting and shooting skills. Old Shepherd

    Finally done and loading good.

I like it without a patch box as well. You did a very nice job on that rifle Sir. Old Shepherd

What vintage could this be considered?

Look how low the front sight is compared to the very high rear sights are. Either replace the front sight with a higher blade or a lower profile rear sight. Then see where you are hitting.
