    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

The .36 caliber with round ball or conical killed, wounded and/or maimed quite few during the Civil War... Even with only 13/15 grains of powder I use in cowboy action matches, I've had no volunteers to act as targets amongst those that have poo-pooed my revolver choice.

    Who can relate

I rebuilt my reloading bench 11 years ago... Metallic cartridge side: Shotshell side: Powder storage: Today: After clearing a little spot so I can actually load... Yes, drawers & cabinets are fully utilized, and I couldn't get any more powder inside that cabinet (old refrigerator) if I...

    .36 or .44?

Like the "cap rake" it prevents caps from being sucked back into the action. With the narrowed slot and Slix Shot nipples the cap is blown apart at the sides and stays forward of the hammer slot. The hammer is narrowed to allow it to fit in the narrowed opening much like the Remington revolver.

    Favorite cap, Uberti 1851, 158s, 1860s?

Remington #10s by a wide margin. RWS 1075s next and CCI #11s in a pinch. I use SlixShot nipples exclusively. I've tried lightening hammer springs and found that they led to FTFs. Replaced mainsprings with factory springs and FTFs disappeared. I habitually give all caps an extra push to avoid...

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

For over 3 decades I simply use lubed wads (Ox-Yoke back in the day, and the Cabela's brand now) between ball & powder in my .36 cal 1851s and can run a 3-day match match without fussing with the guns from beginning to end. A single day match consists of 30 shots per gun over the course of...

    .36 or .44?

I know of many C&B shooters that have installed cap rakes on their revolvers, either themselves or by a 'smith. The reason I don't use them, is that I had four of my 1851s converted to a "Manhattan" conversion, a period modification that performs as well. I have about 25 years of using 2 of...

    .36 or .44?

What's the intended use? I've been shooting an 1851 clone since 1986 in cowboy action events. Someone suggested getting a .44 cal. 1858 Remington to have more clang on the steel targets and they didn't have the problems the open top 1851 has with sucking caps. Well... the 1858 was...

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

I admit, those photos & videos of exorbitant fireballs from front & rear of C&B revolvers certainly give one pause. But,During the second full week of Sep they mostly leave me wondering what they're doing differently from me. Are they loading at max capacity and the mainspring can't contain...

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

MDL, color me a little skeptical about chainfires from the rear. Since mid-1986 I've shot in cowboy action events with an 1851 pattern revolver. My 1st one was an ASM gun assembled from surplus Uberti parts from the Colt 2nd gen contract. (Or so I was tokd when I bought from EMF). Since...

Trouble loading lee conical into cylinders

My very 1st question is: Are you using pure lead to cast your conicals? If not, you're going to have trouble even if the holes were .450.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I've used both in the past. But have gone with SlixShot for my competition pistols tho'! Rem #10s, CCI #11s & RWS 1075 all need a little extra push to fully seat, (I either used the back side of the capper, or a piece of antler as a pusher). Haven't had a cap come off in ages.

New Colt 1851 Came Home Today

Turn yourself in... you stole that revolver. 20 or so years ago when I bought my first pair I paid $450 for one and $600 for the other. (Both C series, serial #s about 200 apart. Wish I could find a consecutive # to either of them)!

    Standing Up To Be Counted

Pessimism gets us nowhere. Sitting on our thumbs gets us nowhere. Being patient is noble and all... but, it doesn't put #10 caps on store shelves. I have no expectations that even a thousand messages to Remington will require their rethinking their long term production schedules... But...

    Standing Up To Be Counted

Yesterday, I went to Contact Us | Remington and make a request for them to start producing #10 caps again. Maybe with enough requests they'll get off their kiester and begin making them available. Here was my request: It might be an automated response, but... maybe... just maybe... word will...

    But still... Learners. better'n not!

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

Since 1986 I have competed in cowboy action events with several 1851 clones & 2nd Gen Colts. I've loaded all six chambers for each "stage" but only capped five. I load balls sized to give a slight ring of lead when driven in the chamber with a lubed wad over about 15 grains of 3F powder. In...

    Yet Another Colt ...

I do appreciate the offer and the obvious spirit in which it was given, but will take this opportunity to decline. Like the other 1851 Navies that have found their way here, they've found a home... like Golden Labrador puppies, they're just too lovable, and knowing their ultimult grace and...

    6-Shooter Velocities Drop?

Any variations in chamber to chamber velocity fluctuations I can always attribute to variations in my loading consistency. (I generally load on the gun in a stand), but my powder drop may vary a little, and bullet tension may also vary. I load with lubed wads, Quit greasing the chambers when I...

    Yet Another Colt ...

is added to the stable of 2nd Gens... Probably paid too much for a non-collectible (no box or papers), in slightly marred condition (left side of grip), but very good metal (possibly unfired) condition. Question: Is a "short arbor" indicated when you can tighten the wedge so far the cylinder...

what size ball to use (exactly)

Way beck in the 1980s when I had a .44 1858, I was told the rule of thumb was Italian clone - .454", ROA - .457". I've never heard where that's bad advice. .454 should give you a good seal on the chamber.
