One Long Gun And One Handgun

Since this is a muzzleloading forum, my Hawken and all 3 Patersons... + my Arkansas toothpick & hawk.

New to these parts and in Chattanooga. I acquired a pile of guns and ammo, to include Uberti Santa Fe .54 cal from Lakeville, CT and several others.

Thank you. Good reading. I have a Santa Fe Hawken that shows a date code of AT (1985). I don't know if the Log Cabin Shop did it to all the Hawkens they sold, but mine has a brass plate inlaid on the top flat just ahead of the breech. .53 caliber and with 50 grains of 2f behind a .526 ball...

Grease packing revolver internals, why synthetic grease?

I've been using Lucas "Red n Tacky" synthetic grease for years... packed well inside the internals of my '51 Navies. I don't fill the action of my 1873 rifle quite the same... there's a lot more movement of the internal parts than in the pistols. I don't use a "wet lube" on the carrier of any...

Grease or Oil on the Arbor

Lucas' "Red N' Tacky" synthetic grease. Same stuff I use on my wheel bearings, u-joints, and other places one commonly uses grease.

    Perfect revolver?

I'm pretty sure of one thing... a picture does equal a thousand words. The one on the bottom left is my first 1851 copy, made in 1985 and purchased by me in late 1986. It's marked by ASM, but all the parts for Colt 2nd series fit it. As do the two Uberti spare cylinders I have for it and the...

How fast can BP revolvers be reloaded?

I've never timed myself... but... I often try to be the first to shoot a stage in whatever cowboy action match I'm entered in, then charge* the cylinders while manning the "unloading table". It usually takes me about 3 other shooters to completely charge the two revolvers (1851s). Then I'll...

    Flask Carrier

I've had this flask carrier (belt) for about 34 or 35 years... It has gotten quite a bit of usage, but I've tried not to abuse it... but... over the past several years the stitching along the sides had dried out and become quite brittle, finally breaking and beginning to unravel. So this...

    Action shield

Only time I shoot left handed is "gunfighter style"... Even tho' I'm actually left handed, I'm right eye dominate, so trained to shoot right handed.

    Action shield

Sent you a PM. 'Smith retired quite a while ago.

    Action shield

Since I had the "Manhattan Conversion" done on my 4 1851s I use for cowboy action, I haven't had a spent cap fall back into the action...Still get them in the web of my hand, tho'! ;)

How many of you dry your revolver in the oven?

Another vote for the synthetic grease in the internals. Don't use the oven... it'll all run out! I haven't bothered to test this theory, it seems like uncommon good sense would tell anyone such is a truth!

Tuning & Repairing BP Revolvers, How To....

Wait a sec... are you saying they don't know anything about cap guns? 'Cause my 1st four cap guns were set up by an exceptional gunsmith out of CA. And they're first rate.

How many of you dry your revolver in the oven?

Hmmm... you don't think all the contaminates flush out with the water? I don't have any food deposits left on my dishes and utensils when they're run thru a cycle. Maybe my washer does a really good job... Why wouldn't the crud washing off the revolver also flush? However, I did it once...

    Uberti Paterson

I remember seeing those in the EMF catalog back in the day and always thought they'd be a neat addition to the Paterson. I guess keeping the 5 spouts aligned with the cylinder would be a hassle?

    Uberti Paterson

Here is a stand a fellow cowboy action shooter made... and although it's sized to fit the 1851, it works for the Paterson as well. I can then use the Paterson loading tool to good effect. The two parts are not permanently attached, so it's easily transported and utilized at the range. Even if...

Dumb cap and ball mistake - advice needed

Remove caps, remove cylinder, screw a wood screw into top ball. Then with wooden dowel across cylinder face, use a pair of wire cutters to grip the screw shank and lever the ball out. Ensure the rear ball is clear to the front, then take the nipple off the rear, dribble a little powder in...

    Pietta Colt 1836 Texas Paterson

I have 3 Pietta Patersons. The oldest is a Navy Arms import, has 3 digit serial # 13x, date coded AE (1979). The other two are both 2017 production imported by EMF. Major difference I can tell is the Navy Arms has quite sharp edges to the grip, whereas the EMFs are quite rounded and dull in...

Let's see how far down the Rabbit Hole this takes me....

When you put the nipples back in, grease them. Just a touch to lube the threads. I leave mine loose until my next shooting session. If you ever have them sieze up, you'll not likely forget to lube 'em again. I keep a tube or two of Thompson Center's bore butter around to lube the arbor also.

    New Guy

Howdy, I'm known most places as simply "Griff". It's been a alias since high school, well over 50 years now. I adopted it as my alias when I started cowboy shooting and made it "official" when I joined SASS the year they formed in 1987. I mostly shoot percussion pistol (1851s) in cowboy...
