Neutralizing Iron Nitrate w/ Lye Water

From what I've read on the ALR forum vinegar evaporats fast on its own. And doesn't need additional washing.

Doesn't Brownell's sell rust and blue remover? I've seen it listed somewhere.

In email from Kibler a couple of weeks ago I was told shipping is expected to begin early to mid October. There are approximately 300 orders.

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Citristrip has worked for me on all kinds of stocks. Don't let it fully dry before scrapping or brushing it off and you'll avoid lots of white powder. I use a garden hose or the wand in the shower to wash it off. A squirt of water won't hurt. Wood doesn't swell or shrink instantaneously. Worst...

    Traditional gun stock finish

I've used the mix of beeswax, turpentine and BLO to finish stocks. It suits me. I also use a paste of beeswax and turpentine.

    Woodsrunners

An update. Killer has about 300 orders for Woodsrunner kits so far. I expect it will take a while to fulfill these and other orders yet to come. It could be awhile before some of us see ours.

    WANTED Bluing Salt

You can make your own using ammonia nitrate, sodium nitrate or similar chemical and sodium hydroxide. These are fertilizer, stump killer and lye. There is much info on line about this. I got an MSDS from Brownell's covering their bluing salts, and found they are nothing more than stump killer...

    Powder flask sling

What sort of strap or cord was used to suspend a large Civil War style powder flask? I'm not reenacting the Civil War, I'd just like to have something period correct for my flask -- I prefer a flask to a horn. Let's not go down the exploding flask road. I use a measure to pour powder down the...

    4f in rifle?

Way back in the '70s I was looking for the fastest flatest shooting load for 100 yard shooting under windy conditions. The final load I tried in my .45 T/C was 120 grains of 4f. It didn't better my groups, but taught me big charges of 4f don't hurt a modern rifles. Much lighter charges of 4f in...

How is rear sight attached to this barrel?

I wouldn't take any of the advice above about filling the screw holes until I've tried this. File the solder in the holes flush with the barrel, drill the solder out using the correct pilot drill, then tap using the correct tap. Compared to steel solder is soft. It out to clean out easily. I'd...

    Woodsrunner: thinking ahead

I have a Kibler Woodsrunner on order. No telling when it might get here, but I'm thinking ahead about it. I ordered a cherry stock. I've read somewhere, perhaps here, that cherry stocks were most often made in the northeastern states, which I take to mean from New York and northward. These...

    What is a "California" Rifle?

Most of the phenotypical traits of the possibly California rifles suggest an Ohio or Midwestern style. The fish belly stock in one post above is an Ohio trait. The buttplates on the rifle above are Ohio shaped ( Not the pickle fork aberrations of the Vincents.) The two styles of trigger guards...

    Wòodsrunner

Ordered a Kibler Woodsrunner today. It will get here when it gets here. I'm not all pumped up to see it but am sure the day it arrives it will be a happy day. I paid for the kit and lock so I guess I'm committed. I had originally planned to order a .54 but after thinking about it decided to...

Glass bedding a TC Cherokee stock ?

Glossing is very simple. I glassed the barrel of a T/C Hawken that fit just a little loose mostly to see what difference it made. Read up on the process and by a glassing kit from Brownell's for your first attempt. It will have everything you need plus good instructions.
