You can make your own using ammonia nitrate, sodium nitrate or similar chemical and sodium hydroxide. These are fertilizer, stump killer and lye. There is much info on line about this. I got an MSDS from Brownell's covering their bluing salts, and found they are nothing more than stump killer and lye. These things work by bonding nitrogen molecules to iron molecules creating the black color we call blue.
