Removing the barrel on a hooked breech rifle for cleaning, yes or no??

No, there is no need to remove the barrel just for cleaning after shooting. My guns are cleaned in the field long before returning home. I used to do the bucket & water method for years. Then several years ago I found an easy, quick and very effective method. Needless to say, I enjoy going...

    Ballistol Patch Lube

Moose Milk: 1/2 Cup Ballistol 1 Ounce Murphy's Oil Soap 2 Cups water - I use distilled water In cold weather use a bit of 91% Rubbing Alcohol to prevent freezing. Patch Lube: Moisten your patches with it as a patch lube and cleaner as you shoot. Use a small, pocket size, airtight container...

    Best overall BP question

I haven't yet but I will and I'll let you know how it goes. Due to the season, give me a bit of time because I don't get to the range much in December. Edited: In the meantime, I found a couple youtube videos that might help to answer your question: Hodgdon Triple 7 Flintlock Lyman Great Plains...

    Best overall BP question

What will you be using it in - muzzleloader (flint or percussion) or cartridge? Is it for plinking, target, hunting or competition shooting?

    Light loads

I run 40 gr in my .50 at target shoots. I discovered a few years ago that less is more when shooting round ball.

Thompson Center Muzzleloaders Pros & Cons

Mine was/is a .50 Hawken. I still have it and always will. I'm winning with the Renegade I rescued a few years ago. No need to change or "upgrade". Although I do have a custom full stock Hawken flintlock slow twist. I haven't mastered it yet. It's hard to leave the TC's home when targets are...

Thompson Center Muzzleloaders Pros & Cons

Correct, good quality production traditional BP rifles. Con: barrel rifling not deep enough.

    Ballistol pricing....

Ballistol is the only lube you need for cleaning, maintaining and yes... even patch lube when used as follows. So yes, it's worth it and they know it. Moose Milk: 1/2 Cup Ballistol 1 Ounce Murphy's Oil Soap 2 Cups water - I use distilled In cold weather use a bit of 91% Rubbing Alcohol to...

    4f priming powder...

What did they use in 1838? The question is: Why not make 4f (finer powder) out of 2f or 3f courser powder, if it is of absolute importance to put a finer powder in the pan?

The results will be posted here on this thread. Generally around the 10th of the month to allow enough time for all the targets to arrive and be scored.

    January 2022 Postal Match

Yes. An excerpt from the opening post says: “ Since cold air makes for numb fingers and shaking hands I decided to go with a nice big target this month! But big targets are just too darn easy to hit so there is a bit of a twist!”

    December 2021 postal match

That's the best kind of practice you can hope for. It was a bit frigid when I shot mine. It makes for a good primer for our three day shoot in February. 🥶
