    Terrible accuracy ?!

Most TC's seem to have a pretty loose bore and prefer a tighter patch than even .015", but perhaps you have one with a tighter bore? Maybe you are tearing the patch during the loading process? My .54 Renegade likes a .530 RB and an .018" pillow ticking patch. I can also use a .535 RB with a...

    Shooting Conicals

1:32 twist is a bit fast for patched roundball (PRB), but many make it work. Most report that a lower powder charge is necessary to get decent accuracy with PRB in a higher than ideal twist rate. To be clear, 1:66 to 1:60 is common for a PRB preferred barrel twist. 1:48 is considered a...

Need new sights — Kensight maybe?

I'm by no means trying to start an argument, and I know some absolutely swear by it, but what about bore butter build up against the rifling? There's been many a thread about people saying they've found it to build up in the bore over time and eventually start impacting accuracy. I won't bore...

Part for T/C Hawken .45 cal

As the others said, it is only there from the manufacturing process. I have a TC Renegade and it was stuck the day I got it. I have never tried to remove it and have no issues with ignition. I clean with the bucket of water method, placing the breach end of the barrel into a bucket of water...

    Not So Wacky Shooting

Great shooting! That "flier" on the first target was the foul shot, my foul shot is always a bit low like that too. I'm sighted in for a 75 yard zero and my first foul shot hits at a 50 yard zero.

    .62 Smoothbore Flintlock Grouse Hunt

A Spruce grouse! I have only ever seen one of them in my life, not very common here in Idaho, at least where I hunt. Mostly see Ruff's, a Blue here and there. The Spruce was in my early twenties and I was pretty high up in elevation, archery elk hunting. I can remember that it was very dark...

    Cleaning a "Patent Breech"

I'm going to wager that you live where you get treated city water and that is what you heat up and then see flash rust when you clean. I have city water and always have seen flash rust if I heated it at all. Anywhere from slightly warm to piping hot = flash rust. Room temp or cold, no flash...

    TC 54 Renegade load

My .54 TC Renegade pet loads. For patched RB. Mine likes 80 grains of 2f OR 3f, same volume amount of either one yields very nice groups. 75 grains is acceptable accuracy, but 70 grains is poor. I've never tried more than 80 grains of powder with PRB, no need with the groups 80 grains...

    Hopkins and Allen .45 underhammer

I have one in .45, but haven't shot it yet, mine has the longer barrel. I have in my notes that it was recommended to use a .433 RB with it, something I read on here at some point. Their bores tend to be a bit tighter than actual .45 caliber.

    Idaho Muzzleloader

I have a .54 TC Renegade that I shoot patched roundball (PRB) out of a lot. Since it sounds like you might be leaning that way, I thought I'd share what works really well in mine. I'd also mention that PRB is much more pleasant recoil wise than a 425 grain conical, your wife will likely...

    Barricade question

I use Barricade as well and would even say I find it superior to Ballistol, as far as rust protection goes. No worries using it. It doesn't take much and dries to a protective film, don't have to leave the rifle bore down for more than a couple days to keep it from migrating into the flame...

    Swabbing between shots

My TC Renegade has to be swabbed at least every other shot or else groups really open up. Damp lubes, grease lubes, chap stick lubes, doesn't matter. Patch fit is pretty tight, so it isn't because the PRB fit isn't scraping the fouling when loading back up. It simply wants to be swabbed...

Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

I have two jags for my BP rifles. One is turned down a bit so I can swab a fouled bore without pushing fouling into the flame channel, and one is left factory size. I carry the turned down jag in the patchbox on the rifles that have one.

    New CVA mountain rifle

The early Mountain Rifle barrels stamped "made in USA" were said to be Douglas barrels I think, and they were known to be good shooters. That being said, yours appears to have been bored out to a bigger caliber. My first order of business would be to measure the bore diameter and check what...

Great to know! I've also been wondering how he's doing and missing his posts.

Help needed on glow in dark front sights

I experience the same thing @Howie1968. F.O. sights work very well for me out in the woods in low light (years and years of using F.O. bow sights to elk hunt), even under a pretty thick tree canopy, but when in a blind or under a roofed shooting area they just don't gather enough light to show...

Marking Ideas for Dear Tine Powder Measures.

I enjoy making measure's out of antler too. I have made several from whitetail antler and one from elk. I cut the antler at a bit of an angle on top for a pour spout. I mark the drill bit depth needed by using an adjustable brass powder measure, it is what I use when developing loads. I...

    Peep/globe combo for hunting?

It really comes down to your eyesight and whether a few extra minutes of seeing the sights well in low light is important to you when hunting. It is also all about finding sights that give a decent compromise between fine aiming, but big enough to be visible in low light when hunting. Many...

    Hopkins and Allen Heritage

I'm aware it is tapered. Mine has the bigger end on the right side, so it was driven in from right to left. Been that way since I got it, so it's very possible the previous owner put it in the wrong way. I'm just nervous to hammer on it with a steel punch, don't want to mar it up. The last...

    Hopkins and Allen Heritage

That is a generous offer, I'd be interested in the used butt stock. Mine does have a patch box I could swap over. I'll fire you a PM. As far as the pin, it appears to have been put in from the right to the left. So the bigger end is on the right side as you'd hold the gun to fire it, so it...
