    patch lube,,,,,,,,,,

I used Castor oil (CO) and denatured alcohol (DA) for a couple of years, as a Dutch Schultz style "dry" lubed patch, although I don't currently use it. It shot with accuracy. I just found that mink oil from Track of the Wolf gave me good accuracy too and I find it more convenient. I will say...

    That was easy.

Looks like it's a shooter for sure! You are a fine free hand shot! Only 50 grains and PRB is awfully pleasant to shoot. I need to play around with trying to find a nice light plinking load in my .54 Renegade. When I first developed a load for it I started at 60 grains and went up from there...

Percussion lock rifle for new shooter

This is my recommendation as well, and I'd add a CVA Mountain Rifle to it. Especially an older one with "Made in the USA" stamped on the barrel. There's one in the classifieds right now.

Made a good score on Speer round balls today.

That makes it an even better deal. I generally buy Speer, they are in my hometown and I like to support them.

    Passthroughs By A Ball

I've only shot two deer with BP. Both with my .54 Renegade. The first was a 75 grain charge of 2f with a RB, about 60 yards, two holes. Exit was very close to the same size as the entry. The other was a 4x4 buck with a 100 grains of 2f and a Hornady GPB, 54 yards, also two holes. Exit about...

    Fire Danger?

Here's a multi shot of a caplock going off at dusk. (My avatar pic). Load was 100 grains of 2f with a hollow base conical, and you can see that some of the powder compacted into the hollow base and was still burning.

9 bucks a box is a good deal, that'll keep you busy for a while.

    .54 Renegade makes meat

Congrats, great looking deer! A .535 with pillow ticking, bet that's a firm combo to push down! I'd need a mallet to get that seated in my Renegade.

    Staining rough sawn pine

Your pine will be fine if you’ve had it that long, it’s green you have to worry about. I don’t remember the stain color but still have it. When I get home I’ll snap a pic of it.

    Staining rough sawn pine

I work in a sawmill and decided to make a mantle a couple of years ago. It was rough sawn and I did run it through the kiln so it wouldn’t warp on me as it dried. I did do some hand sanding on it though. I used a pre conditioner and highly recommend using one. I chose a fairly dark stain. I...

Help....Fiber Optic Sight for 1980 TC Hawken 50 Caliber Rifle?

I have a Williams "Ghost Ring" set of fiber optic (FO) sights currently on my TC Renegade. There were two different variations of the rear sight bolt spacing. Track of the Wolf says there are several different spacings out there and TC never did standardize the spacing. The two most common...

Need help with CVA Mountain rifle lock

For closure, I worked on it again yesterday and got everything working correctly. I removed the trigger assembly again and took out the washers I had shimmed the front and back with. Looking closely at the return spring I could see that it had so much bend in it that it was being made too short...

    Complete Cleaning?

I rarely remove mine, maybe once every two years. It always looks pretty clean inside, I probably shoot it 6-8 times a year around 15-20 shots each time. I think the most common neglected spot having to do with the lock is the inside of the hammer cup. I was a bit intimidated the first time I...

    Muzzleloader Deer in the Rockies

I love your hunting stories Walk, glad to see the grouse success. I really enjoy eating them as "grouse noodle soup" from a Dutch oven, awfully tasty. I've never had rattling work, ever, except for two times I had coyotes come in. I think the buck to doe ratio has to be pretty favorable...

Powder Weight vs volume? New to purcussion.

Out of curiosity, last night I filled my volume measure 12 times and then dumped it onto my scale. I used 3f Goex and an adjustable measure set at 80 grains that has the leveling cone on top. First I filled the measure 6 times to the top, leveled it by swinging the cone into place, and then...

Need help with CVA Mountain rifle lock

Simply because I've read where several other folks have shimmed the stock (on various other rifles), so the barrel would sit on the shims, and they ended up with a tight wedge pin fit and an accurate rifle. Worth trying to me since it's so easy, if the rifle doesn't shoot well then I'll try...

Need help with CVA Mountain rifle lock

Thanks MO_E_W. I did also shim the rear with a washer. I'm wondering if it was too much, as the set trigger now won't even begin to try to function. Before I shimmed the front and back out the set trigger would set and hold on it's own about 50% of the time and would work 100% of the time if I...
