TC maxiball too tight in a TC Hawken ?

I'm going to muddy the water a bit. Why do you need a Maxi-Ball in the first place? Maybe if you hunt griz, but for deer, a round ball is all that is needed.

Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

Actually, the early barrels were made of soft iron, not today's high quality steel. My Hoppy Hopkins barrels were made from ordnance steel. Talk about tough! As far as a lack of cleaning, I think they knew just how important is was to have a clean gun.

Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

A coned barrel will alleviate that problem. However, I periodically clean my ramrod, along with the wood stock. It's not just the metal part that require a little TLC. At the range, use a range rod, most of the time. I mix in a little loading time with my wood ramrod and loading from th bag...

Anyone here ever use a lager bore ML for small game hunting

Watch out for those angry squirrels! They go for your nuts!

Anyone here ever use a lager bore ML for small game hunting

Arkansas has caliber limits for game. Squirrel, not to exceed .36. rabbit not to exceed 40, Deer minimum caliber, .40. It's strange to me that .40 is allowed for rabbit and deer, but .36 for squirrel? I don't get it.

Working for Goex would probably be safer than my past job of meter reading and putting up with dogs, and sometimes customers!

    How old are ya?

I turn 70 in May. I started muzzleloading in 1979. My first rifle was a Thompson Center Hawken. I got interested, and found out the TC was not a Hawken at all. I bought a kit from The Hawken Shop, which is historically correct. After a while, I became interested in other of the more ornate...

    How old are ya?

Gall darn whipper snapper! Thanks for joining us! I was out at my private member shooting range with my flintlock. A guy, and his kids drove up. They were on the next divide. The guy came up and remarked on hoe nicce my muzzleloader looked. He asked several questions. I offered him to...

What historical rifle would you most like to shoot?

No, other than it's a southern mountain rifle. The best look is when Jed enters the cabin, but the camera shot didn't seem to focus, at least for me.

Are we sure tapered touch hole liners are a good idea?

My Kibler SMR came with a White Lightning vent liner already installed. They are reputed to be fast, and outlast other liners.

My Apprentice and Her English Fowler

She has a good teacher to go along with her natural talent! Good rifle building not only takes skill, it takes patience. I wish I could have learned from someone when I put my first rifle together. Some of my expletives had my dog's ears standing up!

Is Getz Barrel Co. Still In Business?

Unless I'm mistaken, his latest barrels are all his. I believe he gave Rice up.

What's going on with Dixie Gunworks

Similar here, but I put my order in on a Saturday, so it took a bit longer. The delay turned out to be the fault of USPS, not DGW.

What's going on with Dixie Gunworks

People have also cursed other muzzleloading supply stores. TOTW anybody? Insert your pet peeve. I have been to DGW, and they are almost entirely mail order. They have to balance the number of employees in order to make a profit, just like all their competitors. During the pandemic, many...
