    Lyman's Great Plains Flintlock Rifle....Good & Bad??

I've had one for some years, now. I like it and it has been dependable. Ron

    For those with walnut gunstocks

I've used walnuts on furniture scratches and it worked out well. Also used it on an old shotgun stock when it fell off a gun rack and suffered its first scratch. We celebrated our 50th in late August. We beat TFoley to it by just a few weeks, in August 1971. We've now been married for almost 20...

A tip from a tight old timer!

I have a Wheeler set and it has proven useful. However, an exception is the wide, but thin, bits. They seem to bend easily leaving a wavy and useless bit. I've had to retire 3 or 4 of the bits. There are plenty of hollow ground bit sets available and I keep them around to replace the damaged...

    Colorado shooters

I am another Colorado shooter out in Golden, CO. It's about 2 hours to Buena vista from my house and 1.5 hours to Fair Play. I'm always happy to take a guest to the Ft. Luption Muzzleloaders range. Ron

    Show us your range box!

My box (now boxes) are used for transport from home to the range. Sometimes, I bring a bag with what I need to load and fire. But the other items are in the box. My larger box also holds ear and eye protection (not required in the old days), eyeglass wipes, bi focal sunglasses, some patch lube...

    bore lights

I have the O'Reilly's SuperRay, the brass bore light from muzzle loader supply houses, and the bobber lights for fishing. The white light from O'Reilly's is great, but it is so bright that I put in a translucent green or red piece of plastic to tame it. The fishing bobber lights I find to be a...

    Show us your range box!

This started life as a sewing and knitting box from Joann's. I added stronger hinges, 3 cross pieces of 1" x 1" on what was a very flimsy bottom. The box started out with raw, unpainted wood. I used wood stain and sealed it against water. The inside: I started another box, but I have to...

    My New Little Tin

I received some thumb drives (flash drives) from a law firm. The drives were enclosed in a rectangular, aluminum container that was just the right size for carrying cleaning and shooting patches as well as other shooting supplies. I've put lubed patches in so reduce the drying out of the...

    South African Muzzleloading

Groete aan die Suid-Afrikaanse swartpoeierskieters! Greetings to the South African Black Powder Shooters! I have worked at least one month each year in South Africa since 1999 and have seen the difficulties in obtaining and using a firearm of any kind. It took my Afrikaner friend over 3 years to...

Birds Eye Stocked Flintlock I Just Finished

What a stunning piece of wood! Did it need any special finish to bring out the birdseye pattern? Ron

    Two days!

I have a herd, flock, bevy, pride, gathering, pack, gang of rabbits who live under my back yard shed. They have been mostly successful in timing their scurry out from under the shed and out through our fence such that our Greyhounds don't get them - most of the time. The dogs drag in an unlucky...

    Flintlock Snobbery

I was fortunate to be present during a flintlock demonstration. It was at a trapper era themed restaurant. The owner of the flintlock was gracious enough to ask me if I wanted to try it. Once I fired it, I was hooked. I visited a local rendezvous and found 2 percussion "Hawken" style rifles for...

    My collection

CosiTrike, if it is not too much of a bother, could you list which of your muzzle loaders are originals and which are modern replicas? That is quite a collection, Rick. I think I am feeling a little envy. Ron

What is the proper name for "possibles bag"?

I simply call it "My leather bag that holds lead balls, patches, powder measure, extra flints (If flintlock), percussion caps (if percussion), capper (if percussion), flintlock tool, cleaning patches, knife, tomahawk, short starter and period correct mobile phone (😁). For short, I use the...

who all uses peeps on their percussion guns.

When my eyes and cataracts made it difficult to keep the round balls on paper, the peep sights made shooting a pleasure rather than a frustrating chore. I bought a Hawken replica that already had an Olympia sight on it. What a world of difference! I have a 57SML waiting to be installed on...

Price for round balls near you?

A local gun shop (Green Mountain) has 50 cal balls for about $14.95 per 100. The 45 cal balls were about $12.95 per 100. At least that was the price a month ago when I stopped there.
