    Colorado Colonial Encampment

Not only are these Colonial Encampments fun and educational, the people who organize them, like Tallswife, are a pleasure to know and talk to. I'll be there on Saturday, barring earthquake or tornado. Ron

Hatfield, Frontier or Deer Ridge Pedersoli?

My understanding is that near the end of their run, Hatfield had the barrel made by Pedersoli, then draw filed the "Pedersoli" from the barrels. You can see the faint marks left by the filing. Ron

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

It always is a good day to be out shooting. After several surgeries, this was my first time out shooting black powder for some time, so that made it even more special. I brought another rifle that I shot, so that made the day even better. My lack of shooting practice was very obvious. That gave...

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

It is true that I can always get a new liner. But I put a lot of work into making that liner fit. It was too long and it stuck out enough to interfere with the movement of the cock and frizzen. I ground and sanded it down until the firing mechanism would work freely. I could do that again, but...

    Remove barrel for cleaning?

I read that it helps to put tape (masking tape?) over the pins on the side that they come out. That way, pieces of wood are less likely to splinter off. Is that a valid approach? Ron

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

cub45, I did know about the hole enlargement, having done it with another flintlock. However, I wanted to leave the drilling as a last fix and planned to try less drastic solutions before making an irreversible change. Ron

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

Thank you. The flash hole is so small that my pipe cleaners are difficult to push in it. I do have several .22 brushes that I will try. Why is it a problem to remove the screw-in flash hole liner to clean the breech area? It is easy enough to unscrew the little flash hole cylinder and expose...

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

Thank you, Loyalist Dave. My Hatfield does have the Pedersoli barrel. As for that breech, I think I keep a local smoking shop in business by buying packages of pipe cleaners. Pipe cleaners? Yup. They are great to get at that breech during cleaning. Ron

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

Thank you. I will take a look at that Muzzle Blasts issue. I have that issue, but haven't looked at it yet. Ron

Converted Percussion Hatfield to Flint - issues

I put an L&R flint lock in my Hatfield rifle that originally came to me in percussion form. It is the flint lock that is made specifically for the Hatfield conversion. I shot the rifle on Thursday and some problems became apparent. By the third shot, the flash hole liner became clogged, giving...

    Powder Flasks

Very nice collection! The display is well done, also. Do you find these flasks in antique stores? Ron

    Flint comes loose in hammer

What would you all think about drilling a hole horizontally through the top ball of the screw and use a rod through the hole to add leverage for tightening? Of course this would be dependent on whether the top of the screw was large enough to accept a hole. Ron

    Remington 1816 Flintlock?

Yes, these are both rifles in my possession. As I look at the Remington, I realized that I was wrong about the Roman nose shape. The Hatfield does have that Roman nose curvature and the Remington does not. I saw that Australian owner thread concerning all the flaws in the Remington he...

    Remington 1816 Flintlock?

Bravo 4-4, I haven't shot it and I don't think it was shot very much before I bought it. It is a little front heavy, but not more so than some of my other muzzleloaders. It does have that "Roman nose" curvature just like the Hatfield. I should add that is has a nicely engraved patch box. I...

    Remington 1816 Flintlock?

Duane is correct in all that he said. The barrel pins in the escutcheons are just decorative. The ramrod thimbles have a hole in them that gives access to screws that hold the barrel. However, the wood in mine is very nice and the inletting is very good. There are two grooves that run alongside...

    Mentors

I started my interest in traditional muzzleloaders when I was about 65, so I had no mentors. There were people who were helpful at the range, but no one I could call a mentor. I read everything I could get my hands on and bothered people on muzzleloader forums with questions. My gun education...

If you could change one thing about muzzleloading...

I support the idea of other posters who said that TV programs and movies that prominently feature traditional muzzle loaders may assist in the expansion of muzzle loading. I am another 70 year old who was influenced by Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone shows on TV. I only started about 5 years ago...
