    Springfield 1842

'evening, If I remember correctly, the 11th PVI was still carrying '42s as late as Gettysburg. Their Col was a fan of buck & ball. Beautiful rifle! Last fall, I accidentally picked up an original 1816 Springfield (converted to caplock) thinking it was a '42. I didn't have my glasses on and...

    SOLD Garrett 1863 Sharps Carbine

'evening, Garrett's are the only reproductions that actually have a workable Lawrence Pellet Primer system in the lock. Unfortunately if any of the parts are missing, they are virtually impossible to obtain, as the original Pellet Primer parts will not interchange with the Garrett pellet primer...

    Civil war era muskets.....

Thanks Hawkeye! A couple have actually moved on, while others have moved in. Just don't have a current photo... The bottom one, is an original heavy barrel target rifle that folks here helped to identify. Two of the Sharps have original locks, as well as bayonets. And an original 1816...

    Civil war era muskets.....

'morning, Agreed about the originals having higher quality springs. Any time that I'm able, I replace the repros with originals. Same with the bayonets - most repros will bend and stay bent if you just look at them funny. And the original bayonets are much lighter weight. Mike

    My brother forgot the powder.........

'evening, My neighbor was given a caplock, and was pretty sure it was loaded. Since he knows I mess with them more than he does, he came to me. Yup, it was loaded, and since we didn't know with what (guy that gave it to him only shoots modern, so we didn't want to unload it by firing), out...

    Sharps problem

'morning, If the new cone, with the smaller opening doesn't work, I'd try a new mainspring. I suspect that's more the problem than the cone. You don't say what make the rifle is, but I've fit original mainsprings in ArmiSport and Pedersoli Sharps with only minor clearancing needed. The...

    1861 Springfield Nipple size threads?

'morning, I got some of those in a batch buy that I did years ago. They don't really work all that well, tried one once and then they went into the spare parts drawer. But keep in mind that you can make your own if you really want that sort of thing. Just put some tight fitting tubing over...

I was gifted a treasure trove of ML rifles and accessories awhile back.

'afternoon, And by remembering the friendship and what you two have done together will be all the more special while shooting the guns he gifted you. That's the best remembrance that you can give him. Mike

    Hammer removal tool

'morning, Check your local auto parts stores, there are a variety of pullers (similar to the one linked above) and find the one that is the best size for what you need. As much as I dislike them, Harbor Freight may even have a multi-pack available at disposable prices. Mike

    Ballistol

'evening, Same as Bearkiller - I use it in the bore when done cleaning and to lube the lock. I also use it to wipe down wood. And leather if I don't have any neatsfoot handy. Mike

Bringing more African Americans to the hobby?

I agree with LD. A couple of weeks ago another unit invited me to join them for a Boy Scout event. After a talk, the kids were allowed to come up and fire the weapons. One group was probably about a dozen, with almost half being black. Generally speaking, the black kids were more reluctant to...

    question on mildew on tent

'morning, I agree with Zonie and I like my tent to be well loved, just not purposefully abused. But at the same time, when it comes to mildew, it trips the allergies too badly to put up with it. Mike

    question on mildew on tent

'morning, I didn't realize that I had put a tent away slightly damp until the next time I needed it. Yup, mildew. I set it up and hosed the entire tent down (inside and out) with white vinegar, let it dry and did it again. Then I left it set up for the better part of two weeks in good weather...

    Sharps blanks

'morning, If I'm using early war clip tail, I use standard .50 paper tubes. If I'm using the later war flat base, I use the same mandrel that I use for making live rounds and I use tissue paper for the base. I really don't use the flat base blanks much, they're so tedious to make, and without a...
