    REGARDING 1862 5-SHOT POLICE MODELS?

Mine took a lot of work - new arbor to fix the loose one, shim the barrel to correct the length, polish and tune the action, aftermarket nipples, new front sight, open the chambers to the correct size, and more I don't remember. But it works great now and I really like it. Small and powerful...

Target shooting. Roundball .440 vs .445

Rifling form and of course actual dimensions have a lot to do with it. Of three 45 caliber rifles I have, two work great with .440 balls and the TC with the very shallow rifling likes .445 a lot better.

Yes. It makes great charcoal for gunpowder making! And no bark to peel.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Made a batch of caps using the new .005" brass sheet I got, then tested them in a 1860 Army revolver. I'm very happy to report that they work 100%, so much better than the beverage can caps I was making. Also charred two rolls of TP for tomorrow's batch of BP. Oh, and ordered a Kibler SMR kit...

Are Some BP Revolvers Just Not Reasonably Accurate?

Not only chamber size but pay attention to the forcing cone and the crown. Just like any modern revolver, all these things need to work together for it to be accurate.

    bullet for fast twist 45?

I've been recently shooting the Lee 405HB Trapdoor bullet in my Parker Hale Volunteer with great results. I size and lube at .460" then run them through a .450" push through die. Lube first so as to not collapse the grooves. Cheap mould, good performance. Gotta like that. They actually shoot a...

    what were they thinking??

I've had a couple of TC guns like that. At least they're a lot easier to fix than a double. You've got your work cut out for you if you attempt to repair that one!

Tap- o- cap style musket cap tool question

I built one years ago and still use it. Just a scaled up version of the #11 tool. If I were in a position to produce them I am confident they would sell. So far, musket caps have been more available then standard ones but that could change at any time. As a bonus, the homemade caps will fire my...

Questions for the Pritchett bullet shooters/casters

Same here, I have the NOE moulds and plug plates. I haven't made cartridges with them yet but they work well patched and loaded over loose powder.

    DIY Caps Question

The CCI plastic trays are perfect for that. I use a bamboo shishkebob skewer to pick them up out of the tray and at the same time tamp the mix down, it is the perfect fit.

    Southern Mountain Rifle

Sort of like the Dixie Tennessee rifle. You could get them in 50 cal but they're kind of a heavy club.

    DIY Caps Question

Thanks for listing it. I also add a tiny bit (.2 grains) of pyro aluminum to my mix to basically turn it into a magnum cap, and .2 grains of baking soda to hopefully improve shelf life by neutralizing any potential sulfuric acid formation. For anybody who wants to do this, keep your batches...

    DIY Caps Question

Yes, I made my own. I just took the design of the #11 one and scaled it up for musket caps. It seems strange that nobody I know of is making one yet.

    DIY Caps Question

    1. Yes 2. No if you clean your firearm properly 3. Equal or better depending on what you put in them 4. Yes. I use Duco cement and acetone to bind them and they don't fall apart. My caveat - making caps for revolvers is a lot more challenging than for rifles. I tried normal beverage cans...

    Powder Inc.

I used to drive through Arkansas frequently, and would stop to pick up powder at Powder Inc. If you are near there, it's the way to go to save money and have a better selection than what you can buy online, such as FA grade powder in bags for much less.

    Progressive depth rifling questions

I have a 1863 Miroku and it does not have progressive depth rifling. I've never heard of any reproduction other than P-H that does.

Thanks! I'm going to try some.

    Cap Priming Compound

Where do you find .005" brass sheet? I want to try that and see if I can get better revolver caps.

    Cap Priming Compound

How many bags are there? KCL is white, S is yellow, and Antimony Trisulfide is black.
