    Pedersoli Brown Bess tune-up

The next time I probably won't even be on the paper. I have no idea how anyone managed to shoot a Brown Bess acurately, but I guess the massed fire thing meant it wasn't particularly important. Horizontal aiming isn't a problem, but a vertical hold will take some experience I guess...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess tune-up

Well, I finally made it to the range with the Brown Bess. After shooting pistols for I awhile, decided I better get the Bess broke in and see if I really like shooting flintlocks. Fired it once in the pistol bays for a function test. The eye is drawn to the bayonet lug so shot really low at...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess tune-up

I bought a previously owned Pedersoli Brown Bess a couple of weeks ago. As near as I can tell it has never been shot. (Decided I'd like to start shooting rather than waiting to finish my kit--plus I've always wanted a Brown Bess.) So I'm in the process of cleaning it up and getting it ready...

    Kentucky, Lexington area

Frazier Historical Arms Museum in Louisville. The museum's name has apparently changed, hopefully it still has all the exhibits from the Royal Armoury.

OK, I'm going to remove breech plug, eventually

Thanks everybody. It's out now. I guess its a mixture of not having done this before and not wanting to screw it up. I have a tendency to jump in and I don't think that's going to work well building a flintlock. Didn't have any brass, copper or lead, but I did have some sheet metal handy, so...

OK, I'm going to remove breech plug, eventually

I'm going to remove the breech plug to begin inletting. Naturally, it won't budge even though it's never been fired. My standard adjustable wrench doesn't fit well since the tang sides are not parallel and its too short to get any leverage. My pipe wrench kind of fits, but starts to dig into...

Remove breech plug or never remove breech plug

Thanks everyone. The kit is the RK-6 Penn Fowler with a cherry stock. I can see how it would be simpler to do the inletting with the plug out...should be challenge enough being my first and the barrel is part flat sided and part round with a ring at the transition. The barrel/plug already has...

Remove breech plug or never remove breech plug

I'm getting ready to start building my first flintlock (Jim Chambers kit). First step is to start inletting the barrel into the stock. The first three sources I look at say remove the breech plug or show it removed. (Turpin dvd, House dvd, and Recreating the American Longrifle book.) TOTW...

Looking for information on a builder - Caugh

Thanks! No wonder I couldn't find anything. I even went back to it to write down the name, but I was interpreting the script H as a C.

Looking for information on a builder - Caugh

I was at the CLA show today and saw a nice-looking flintlock marked Caugh on the lock and top of the barrel. The barrel also had "Friendship" on the top. I have not been able to locate anything on the web about the gunmaker...can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Contemporary Longrifle Association Annual Show & Meeting?

Looks like attending is a definite maybe at this point. I've been contemplating a career change in a few years from IT to maybe building flintlocks so this would probably be a make/break event for that decision.

Contemporary Longrifle Association Annual Show & Meeting?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like its worth the trip...unfortunately we vacationed in Kentucky a couple of years ago (enjoyed the Frazier museum in Louisville) so I'm not sure my social secretary is up for revisiting the area this soon. May have to bribe with a side-trip down to see the Biltmore...

Contemporary Longrifle Association Annual Show & Meeting?

I'm thinking about trying to get to this in August. Has anyone been to prior CLA shows? Did you find it worthwhile? What did you like/dislike? Thanks.
