    How do you load bullets?

"...grinding away..."? On a 2nd gen Colt? : ) The bullets look sweet. Sort of barrel-shaped with a round nose in a shape as if a ball had been cut in half. I guess I'll send them back (if I can remember where I got them!) and exchange them for balls. Disappointing.

    How do you load bullets?

I stuffed my 1860 Colt with charges and balls, and it was easy as pie, but the 200 gr round nose bullets (made by Buffalo Bullets) designed for cap and ball revolvers are a mystery to me. I wanted the extra energy and heard rumors they were out of business, so I bought 5 boxes of them, but I...

Taking a sledge to the wedge

The wooden dowel worked like a charm. Actually, it was a short wooden coat rod. Once the wedges popped into the barrel, I could pull them clear of the arbor with finger pressure. I cleaned and oiled the Army and the Dragoon. Put some Birchwood casey choke tube lube on the nipple threads...

Taking a sledge to the wedge

"the spring " thingy" has to be held down on the side opposie the wedge screw as you knock the wedge out. Its easy if you have a wooden dowel. You simply place the end of the dowel again s the spring thingy at a 45 degree angle....the tap the other end of the dowel....this will hold the spring...

Taking a sledge to the wedge

Thanks guys. I just got my 2nd gen 2nd Dragoon today, and it has the same issue. I'm curious about the little lip in the center spring 'finger' that protrudes above the slot on the right side. It would seem that rapping the wedge will just pound the spring lip into the barrel metal. It looks...

Taking a sledge to the wedge

Like a lot of people it seems, I'm having trouble getting the wedge out of my Colt. I tried rapping with heavy plastic screwdriver handles, but all I accomplish is shaving off pieces of handle. On close inspection, I see what looks like a kind of spring - a center piece of metal with cuts on...

    Sealing chambers

That's an excellent - trying one round in one chamber. My Army arrived yesterday, and it's sweet. It was sold as used, but was never fired. I can see I'll have no problem loading a ball, but I haven't figured out how to get the bullet in past the 'cutout' in the barrel. The 1,000 #10...

    Help new guy : )

So traditional gun oils (I have some FP-10, Rem Oil, Break Free, EzOx, etc.) don't violate the petroleum-based thing? Thanks guys. I've spent my whole shooting life trying to keep water off guns so this will be a little creepy. : )

    Help new guy : )

Third post, more questions. My head is spinning from the articles and opinions I've read about one cleaning regimen over another, the virtues of one powder over another, the evils of petroleum-based solvents/lubes, and thoughts on lubing, slathering, buttering, greasing, etc. I have 2 lbs...

    Sealing chambers

Now's the time to ask if I made a mistake ordering .451 Buffalo Ball-etts and Buffalo Bullets. I was so psyched to find a supply, I bought 'em, and .451 was teh only size available, so I assumed the Buffalo folks knew their stuff. Will they be too small, or do bullets behave differently than...

    Sealing chambers

Lubing the ball -- good point. I don't want a lead lined bore. I will definitely lube the ball. "My 2nd gen 1851 Colt prefers #11 caps, my High Standard Griswold & Gunnison likes #10s better." The caps I bought came by the 1000, so I hope #10 is kind to my Colt! : ) I guess a little big...

    Sealing chambers

I have two 2nd gen Colts and I've ordered Remington #10 caps. I hope they fit well. I bought some kind of chamber sealer from Maine but I can't remember what it is. Everything is in the mail as I write, so I'm just trying to get a jump on things. Thanks for the advice.

    Sealing chambers

Still new to this, second post. What's the best stuff to seal a loaded chamber with? If a ball shaves a ring of lead off (for a tight seal) and a lubed wad is used on top of the powder, does the chamber have to be greased over with something? And is Ballistol the recommended...

    Brass frame? Steel frame?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm a former semi-auto shooter who got fed up with ammo shortages and FFL transfers. I'm also a 19th century history buff, so... here I am. I have a 2nd Gen Colt 1860 Army, as I said, and a 2nd gen 2nd Model Dragoon. I can't believe I waited so long to get in touch...

    Brass frame? Steel frame?

Howdy. I'm new to this, and new here. What is meant by brass frame? I have a 2nd gen Colt 1860 Army and the triggerguard is brass, but the backstrap is steel. The frame is color cased steel. For the purposes of powder charges, does this count as a steel framed gun? Thanks!
