New Ruger Old Army – Need help dialing in

I am on board with Mike on the open top design. If the pistol is set up properly its a very strong platform, more so than the Remington. You have contact with bottom of the arbor socket, the frame area where the wedge fits, the slot where the wedge fits and the two pins and frame area at the...

    Dropped Dragoon?

Hate to break it to ya, you ain't unscrewing any thing on that barrel. It's all one piece. It could be mounted in a 4 jaw chuck and centered up but would need additional support from a steady rest or something similar. My question would be why was it being beat with a hammer to begin with. All...

    Dropped Dragoon?

So far I've worked on Uberti, ASM and Armi San Paolo Walkers. Also seen one or two from Palmetto but they might be just an importer. Quality runs from from really good to pretty awful. Every one had a short arbor.

    Loose fit of primers

If you have a caliper measure the nipple about halfway down the taper. If its less than .160 CCI caps will be loose. If it's long enough you can shorten it , the number you;re looking for is .174 at the midway point on the taper. If it's too short you need a another nipple. Trying to widen it...

Manufacture Date for my Uberti Revolver

Date may be under the trigger guard. Been seeing a lot of Uberti dates under the guard, it's laser etched on the newer ones.

    Load for Uberti Walker Revolver

Agree with @Dickydalton. The chambers can be opened up to .453, same as Ruger Old Army. This gets you into a .457 size ball. My personal preferred bullet is a 200 grain semi wadcutter. I need to check on the powder charge with the 200 grn bullet.

    Dropped Dragoon?

Here's some other things to check, how does the wedge fit, tight or loose and floppy? Judging by the muzzle damage someone was either trying to get barrel off of it wasn't going back together and a don't force it get a bigger hammer frame of mind came into play. This pistol is most likely a...

How much powder for dove load?

I like to hunt quail with an antique double barrel. Learned a while back to square the load. Equal volume of shot to powder. This solved a problem with a big hole in the pattern.

CVA Big Bore mountain rifle lock issues

Sometimes the bridal screws can be too tight and pinch the tumbler between the bridal and the lock plate assuming of course that it has a bridal.

New to BP shooting with a gun that has ignition issue or me?

Something no one seems to have mentioned in diagnosing this problem. When you pop a cap does it go thunk or is it a sharp sound like firing a .22 blank? The duller thunk sound indicates a clear channel and a sharp crack shows a plugged nipple or channel going into the the barrel. I shoot T7...

New Ruger Old Army – Need help dialing in

The accuracy is definitely there having punctured a few jackrabbits at over 50 yards with my beater ROA. There was no flopping around, animal was dead right then and there. 200 grn semi wadcutter over 35 grns of Pyrodex P. Bullet traveled the entire length of the rabbit and stopped just under...

    1860 44 cal Navy replica

Agreed, it boggles the mind. One way or another it lit off 3 chambers. The only thing that changed in the all the times I shot this pistol was the spilled powder all over the front of the cylinder.

New Ruger Old Army – Need help dialing in

I think maybe Bill Ruger was thinking about ACW pistols and might have decided the Old Army had to shoot the same? Just about every cap and ball revolver I have shot would shoot point of aim...level sights and a 6 oclock hold at 100 yds. Since I rarely shoot at things closer than 30/35 yds I...

    1860 44 cal Navy replica

I really don't believe that chain fire came from the back of the cylinder. I think the amount of powder that was embedded in the lube at the front may have been responsible. Regardless it was the first and only time that pistol has chain fired.

    Keeping Walker cylinder turning freely

The frame was stretching. With the short arbor and full house loads it was just a matter of time. I know I sound like a broken record on the arbor issue. Having seen a number of these big pistols wrecked because of the short arbor I feel the need to give a heads up on the problem. One of the 2 I...

    1860 44 cal Navy replica

I was in the same frame of mind as you until I had a chain fire on an 1860 Navy. I got sloppy and spilled some powder in the front of the cylinder. The chambers were covered with lube so it shouldn't have caused any problem. Pistol fired 3 chambers. I always believed chainfires came from the...

    1860 44 cal Navy replica

Wouldn't that be the reason for putting lube over the ball/ bullet? And preventing chain fires?

    Question about arbor shim

In some cases Pietta arbors are too long. It's rare but it does happen. I find them easier to deal with than the short Uberti arbors.

    Keeping Walker cylinder turning freely

I am fairly certain especially after Bad Karma found the documentation on bedding the arbor, that Colt would have made sure the arbor was properly seated. I can state from repairing Walkers that full house loads fired on a short arbor will stretch things to the point of the wedge becoming so...

    arbor grease

Have to disagree on all greases and oils being the same, not trying to discount your experiences. I was in the aircraft world as a mechanic for quite a number of years. There are oils and greases that definitely do not interchange and are significantly different in use and application. Good...
