The Shooting Has Begun with the GPR

Your lube sucks as the ignition is burning through the patch. Sharp lands cut the sides of the patch but do not touch the center. The hole in the center of the patch indicates the patch burning through. I use a mixture of 15-20 percent Napa cutting oil and the rest water with a dash of liquid...

    Rifle shoots to one side

Well Squint, many rifles do not shoot on target until a fouling shot is made. Mine included. If my second to forever shots are on target, I shoot the first shot into the ground and then enjoy my range day. When the barrel dirties up, you're going to shoot 6 inches to the right.

Does anyone have a pic of powder in a pan?

You can fill the pan, or you can use just one push of a 4F dispenser. You can cant the rifle to the left or to the right before firing or leave the powder in the middle. You can use 3F avoiding using two powders or use 4F. Every rifle is an individual as is the shooter. What works best for...

    Superfine powder difference?

I buy good ram rods and I never pull a loaded ball from a rifle.

    .50 Calber for Elk?

PRB will work but I would prefer a slug as the rifles have 1:48 twist.

    Superfine powder difference?

Two things, I have never looked down a loaded barrel to see if there were dings in the lead. I am surprised that you have done that. If you use a decent ram rod with a cup on the end to push the ball patch combo down the barrel, I am surprised that you saw any dings.

    Novelty shooting match suggestions please.

At my club, I had a Sgt. York shoot as was shot in the movie where Alvin took all five contests and won a "beef critter". I placed white papers with a sharp V cut into them on wood sprayed black. The closest to the bottom of the v without touching the paper was the winner. The shooters shot...

    Superfine powder difference?

In black powder cartridge rifles, the powder is compressed up to 2 tenths of an inch for various reasons. One reason is consistency as equal pressure gives consistent velocity. Many shooters throw their ramrods down onto the patched ball in the barrel until the ramrod bounces. It shows them...

    Superfine powder difference?

Did you buy it or was it given to you? If you don't know what is in the can, use caution. Finer powder than 4F was made by Dupont.

    Help Identifying

I know that it is way over priced. I am not the greatest at this, but it sorta looks like a Traditions rifle with a hardwood stock.

    Witnessed Unsafe Behaviors

A story that I heard from a range master. A gentleman loaded his new Kentucky rifle by pouring powder from the can. He shot from the bench. He picked himself up from the ground, left, and never returned. Trapper lore: There was one hunter on a horse reloading his rifle after wounding a...

    Witnessed Unsafe Behaviors

My scare was a shooter that tried three caps which did not ignite the main charge. The range master told the shooter to place his rifle at the shooting line pointed down range. The shooter placed his rifle in a leather case and did as instructed. 3 to 5 minutes later, the rifle fired and...

    Full length bedding

Put clay into everything you do not want to be filled with the bedding material. To get a bit of clearance, place electrical tape on the sides of the barrel where it will be bedded. I place the release agent on the whole barrel as sometimes bedding material gets where it doesn't belong. I...
