New BP Shooter looking for help on what all else I'll need.

Thanks - A horn is not out of the question if I'd be better served with one vs a brass flask. I found some Cureton ones I like, just not sure about the sizes of them (medium vs large). I am more concerned about getting what would be better for me as a hunter, walking the woods shooting, shooting...

New BP Shooter looking for help on what all else I'll need.

Got everything else on order pretty much. Now just waiting for it all to get here. Still looking at flasks, found this one TRESO Powder Flask solid brass Muzzleloader 11-75-04 Made in USA. Since I am not as concerned with being PC/HC I am thinking that would be a good one to throw in a small...

New BP Shooter looking for help on what all else I'll need.

Good call - Already procured some old ones I use with my other guns when out shooting or claening them. Sharpied them GR for Gun Rag so they don't get mixed up, not that that would be easy to do with the beautifully fragrant aroma of Hoppes or CLP emanating from them lol

New BP Shooter looking for help on what all else I'll need.

Thanks, @Grenadier1758 ! I have a buddy who is a big BP guy and was chatting with him last night and he also recommended just going with 3F. Thanks for all the other information as well! Excited to get the rest of what I need to get out and start making smoke! Makes sense to get the...

Another Help me decide, I'm new to BP and Flintlocks post!

My Lyman Deerstalker arrived today! Since I know everyone likes pictures here are a few I took real quick tonight. After a few pulls of the trigger, it was throwing sparks! The quality seems pretty decent as well. I might take some steel wool to the stock and knock a couple of rough places off...

New BP Shooter looking for help on what all else I'll need.

My Lyman .54 Deerstalker arrived today! I have been researching what else I’ll “need” and below is what I came up with. I do have some questions on some of them that I’d appreciate advice on before I go spending a bunch of money I really don’t need to or spending it on the wrong things...

Rocks will make a workable flint

I’m just getting into BP and that is pretty much why I started looking at inlines, switched to looking at percussion, but ended up ordering a flint. Have buddy who’s a big BP guy and that was one of the first pieces of advice he replied back with when I mentioned I was looking at getting a BP rifle.

Thanks @brazosland I already ordered the Deerstalker. Figured at the cost difference of it vs the other imports if I found I had to swap the lock I’d be close to the same price as the going with one of those with the import lock and I’d have one with a better lock. Would be great if that’s not...

Thanks, both good ideas! I could see store-bought precut patches getting expensive with BP!

Thanks @Kansas Jake I'll check those sites for powder, had been looking at it on Powder Valley and was looking at getting 2F for the charge and 4F for the primer. Had also looked at TOW for flints, just need to figure out which one to go with, as well as the size. Also looked at October country...

Well, I just pulled the trigger on the .54 Flintlock Deerstalker! Excited to get it! Thank you all for all the input and information you gave me. It really helped to steer me on this. The GPR was a tough one to not get with all of the recommendations for it, but the more I read and learned I...

@NorthFork Good to know! I had heard that about the Investarms locks which is what led me to look at them over others in that same price-range, etc...

Another Help me decide, I'm new to BP and Flintlocks post!

Great question! I don't want to have to rely on trying to find caps. Harder to find right now, just like primers. I originally was just looking to get an inline, but quickly realized I wanted to shoot RB and not be reliant on having to have enough primers. Led me to percussion next, but then to...

Thanks @Crow-Feather I am close to pulling the trigger on the Deerstalker in 54. Since you have that gun and are having good results with it what would you recommend for flints, powder, patches and RB's? I was thinking of starting with three pounds of 2F and 1 pound of 4F for powder. For RB's I...

@Sparkitoff Thanks for taking the time to provide so much information. Some good points and I had already given thought to the mass-produced lock and going the Deerstalker route would cover the cost of upgrading to an RPL L&R lock I believe which I've heard great things about and specifically...

Another Help me decide, I'm new to BP and Flintlocks post!

Yeah, I saw that one too @Capnball good deal and was a nice looking rifle. As for pricing here is what I have found as the best deals. Lyman Deerstalker .54 Caliber Flintlock $516.64 shipped w/tax Lyman Trade Rifle .54 Caliber Flintlock $594.79 shipped w/tax Great Plains .54 Caliber Flintlock...

@Capnball Yes, Kibler is a kit I had looked and my thought is getting a "hunter" BP flintlock now and a nice kit like one of his, or something along those lines down the road to finish and serve as more of an "heirloom" type of piece that I could still take out and hunt, but something worth...

Thanks for all the information/suggestions so far! Seems like all 3 would be good based on what everyone has said so far. Not making it easier to decide! Tough decision, that I am going to sleep on tonight I think, but I am leaning heavily towards the Deerstalker for the reasons that I am not...
