    Percussion pistol build question

Great , thanks for all the replies. I've lined the drum up to rest on the side plate and will fine tune it once the lock plate is fully inletted. Doing all the inletting with hand chisels so it's going to take a few weeks getting it right. Proofed the barrel with the drum installed over...

    Percussion pistol build question

Thanks, I'm just starting to inlet the lock plate and will set it up with some solid support for the nipple barrel. I've made a few rock locks but this is my first "stuff laying around the shop" parts build for a cap lock.

    Percussion pistol build question

I'm building a .50 caliber smooth bore percussion pistol and have a question about the nipple drum. Should it be supported on the bottom by the lock plate? I'm asking because all of the factory fire arms I've seen have a small gap between the bottom of the nipple drum and top of the lock plate...

    Basic carving chisel suggtions

I have a 12 piece set of Greenlee chisels which must be 50 years old along with a mix of the Swiss brand gouges and V's. I have found that a flatter gouge gives better control when moving a lot of wood with hand pressure or mallet. A set of smaller palm gouges are needed for the fine finishing...

CVA Frontier With Nickel Silver Barrel?

I've a CVA Frontier with a brown barrel and the buck horn rear sight. The red color of the stock is probably the way it came from the factory. I have seen that color on a factory built CVA Hawken cap lock. Nice rifle ;)

Do you prefer Real Black Powder or a BP substitute?.........Why?

I was given about ten pounds of Pyrodex along with about the same amount of BP last year which along with what I already had in storage is more than I'll shoot in years. The Pyrodex works well in my caplocks but I prefer BP just because it smells right. I also agree with the cleaning problem...

trigger pull, best ways to ease it up?

I had to move the pivot point on the trigger of a pistol which I built. It took less than a 1/4 inch to go from a 10 lb pull down to a 3 lb pull. Good luck with it.

    Percussion rifle cleaning info please

Most of my long guns have the patent breach and clean up with no problems. I remove the barrel from the stock and pull the nipple and cleanout screw. Place the butt end of the barrel in a warm bucket of water and squirt some dish washing detergent in the bore. Then I'll just use a tip with a...

    First Project Pistol

Very nice, you have some great looking wood on that pistol. I have a rock lock kit and a factory cap lock just like that in .50 caliber. You might want to check the rear lock screws, on both of mine they rubbed on the inside of the hammer when cocked. Also the tang screws on both of mine were a...

Has any old powder ca 1750-1880 been studied?

Some of the earlier black powder recipes had more sulfur or carbon than what we have commercially available now. I think I read somewhere the British BP manufactured in the 1700's had more carbon while the French BP manufactured during that same time period had more sulfur. The burn rate was...

    change to double set triggers

Double set triggers by their design are longer than the one on your rifle. You would need a different trigger guard along with the double set trigger assembly. There would be considerable inletting required as well as a fly installed on the tumbler if it doesn't have one. Polishing the internals...

    Can anyone identify this pistol?

I've replaced soft frizzens with Siler small rifle frizzens. I get the raw castings and with a little file and drill press work they can be made to fit just about any lock. The only drawback is they are not original to the manufacturer.

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

I saw one rifle at a rendezvous that had an immaculate walnut stock and furniture on it for 350.00. Took a peek down the barrel and the bore looked like a mouse had been chewing on a bar of soap. I've never seen pitting that bad. Don't think that rifle was worth more than parts. I was so...

    Buying A Used MuzzleLoader.

I've also been getting some surface rust when oiling a bore with remoil. The spray works a little better than the stuff in a squeeze bottle but I've seen rust within a week while using it. Now I swab down the bore with regular motor oil for storage which has worked a lot better.

    Browning Stainless steel

I've some 7/8 inch stainless round stock that might go that route if I ever get inspired. It would have to be a .50 caliber smooth bore though.

    Browning Stainless steel

I've seen stainless steel get "blued" by acid. I was making some lemon wine once and the stainless steel mixing spoon developed a blueish color while I stirred. After about five years the color still hasn't worn off the spoon. Got a little battery acid on a stainless knife blade which...

    Made a new short starter.

I've been using 38 special brass for short starter tips for my .50 caliber pistols and rifles. I found a use for some of the small primer .45 ACP brass I've picked up by using it for .58 caliber short starter tips. Though I was the only one to use cases for rod tips. LOL

    Traditions Pistol Build Help

I have two Traditions pistols, one a flinter built as a kit and the other a factory cap lock and have noticed a couple things needed that will make the pistol shoot or look better. First the tang screw that runs down to the trigger assembly is a little too long and with the Kentucky models the...

Finally a shootable buffalo hunter .58

When I picked up my Buffalo Hunter it came with a bunch of different supplies along with a mix of minnie balls. Some of the minnie balls were shorties that weighed 325 grains and shot great over 35 grains of 3F. The previous owner must of shot competition with that load because there were over a...
