Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

I seldom keep anything in a patch box. But I do have this old original rifle with stuff in the patch box. Old patches, old caps and a couple old round balls that have turned white.

    Wonder Lube

Put a gob of Crisco in your mouth and then put a patch in your mouth. Spitloob! Let us know how it works out!

How cold is too cold for you to shoot?

I went to a match yesterday. When I got to the range it was at 0. Walked into the club house and flipped on the lights and propane heater. Fifteen minutes later it was nice and toasty. Shot the match then went for Chinese buffet where I get a senior discount. It was -8 when I got home. If my...

    Wonder Lube

I used wonder lube one time a long time ago at a match. Couldn't remember what lube I put on my bullets so I wrote wonder lube on my equipment list. It worked great even though I've always heard negative comments about it. Is it the same as Bore Butter?

    Trouble…

Sometimes I get the feeling these stuck ball threads are some kind of contest. Will the next stuck ball thread have 200 grains of powder trapped in the bore with a cap glued on the nipple? Then somewhere down the line 150 gtains of FFFF trapped in the bore? Lot of drama in these threads.

    Lanolin for rust.

    Worse than a mountain man?

    Lanolin for rust.

My grandma used to slather herself all over with lanolin while sitting on the edge of her bed just before retiring when I was a little kid. If you made the mistake of getting within reach of her, you got slathered too. I only made that mistake once. Slather yourself with lanolin and go to bed...

    Lanolin for rust.

I use lanolin in bullet lube. Sheep invented lanolin to keep from getting wet when it rains.

    Problems with "Bore Butter"

You'd kick If we hung ya with a new rope. Kick, get it? ;)

    Problems with "Bore Butter"

Yep. 73 - 74, somewhere in there. I could be off but not much. I used it in my first percussion rifle using maxiballs. Once I caught onto PRB I never went back.

    Joseph Golcher rifle

Been a long time since reading about Golcher. He was a prolific lock supplier and he did make rifles, I think. The turned muzzle is commonly found on picket rifles. I'm sure RB rifles also had the feature. Neat old rifle! If the twist is fast like 30-40 inches it is made to shoot a patched...

    Sprue cut: Facing which way?

I load with the sprue down because when I started I didn't know no better and that is how I do it. One day my shooting buddy was watching me and he told me I had to load with the sprue up. When asked why he told me so it won't get stuck in the bore if the ball turns while going down the bore...

    I just aquired a 58

I use a .570 ball and .015 pillow ticking spit patch, over fifty grains of GOEX FF in my GM 58. Will clover leaf at fifty yards and recoil is mild.

    Too much detail

Sometimes I weigh all my charges and store them in these little vials. For some target matches. It's more accurate than the volume measuring devices I have. And come to think of it would be real handy to have a few in your pocket when hunting. Lot easier than wrastling a powder horn and measure...

Anyone here shoot 25 yard offhand match's?

Once in a while I do when a match calls for it. I try to avoid 25 yards as my sights are not set up for target shooting that close. I prefer fifty yards. A short barrel like 36 inches works best for me. And I like a heavy rifle from 12 to16 pounds. At 25 yards caliber makes little difference...

    58 good and bad

I have a .58 Hawken rifle with a Green Mountain barrel. I really love that rifle. Super accurate. 50 grains of powder it is not unpleasant to shoot.

    Longest Flintlock rifle

A few years ago on the ALR forum there was a beautiful rifle just finished that had, I think, a 56 inch barrel. Of course everyone gushed over it and said how great it was and on and on it went, until I posted. All I said was "I don't like it", and I didn't and I still don't. How dare me say...
