Given the rotational velocity of the ball/patch as it leaves the muzzle, the patch will flair out immediately and not get caught on the ball. Think about the guy tossing a pizza or throwing a fishing net but on steroids.

It’s unlikely a change in patch size will take a load from “off the paper” to “grouping nicely”. I would be more inclined to credit an improvement in your offhand shooting. Only way to know for sure is to bench the gun with both loads to remove as much of the human factor as possible.

Before making your choice, check your state game regs. They may have caliber restrictions, depending on the game being hunted.

I went with walnut, too but decided on a darker stain. Used LMF American Walnut stain and Permalyn finish and sealer.

Between high frequency loss from flying in the Navy to shooting every week, I always wear hearing protection at the range. Only exception is when hunting.

Pretty much what Scota said. Put it in a pocket or pouch. Any powder containers left on the shooting bench will eventually create a problem.
