    Decisions Decisions

Thinking back over the decades I can't remember too many second shots on ruffed grouse even with a suppository shotgun.

    Slow motion clay destruction

Been shooting skeet with my 20 ga Pedersoli flint double. Maintained lead works well and eliminates the timing differences from shooting suppository shotguns with a swing thru/pull away lead. Have a bit of trouble with some low house presentations as the right frizzen gets in the way of sight...

    You left out caps/flint cost.

Which Flints Produce the Best Spark?

The couple of sawn agate flints I've tried didn't last long and couldn't be knapped to renew the edge (or if there is a way to sharpen them I don't know what it is). My impression is they're an attempt to produce a completely uniform product that gets used a few times and then tossed. They're...

At what point to stop cleaning?

An appropriately sized bore mop also comes in handy for getting the grooves clean. Just like bristle brushes, make sure you don't get the press fit ones or they will eventually come loose. The bore mops can also be washed after use so they stay effective longer. Like most have already said, I...

Sporting clay courses, woods walk for smoothbore shotgunners?

Our club has skeet, trap, 5-stand and sporting clays, all set up on a key system with automatic pullers. The skeet and trap are voice activated, the 5-stand and sporting use push button controllers with the option of setting a time delay. Basically you can go out and shoot by yourself on your...

    What shortage?

Might want to drill down on that a bit further. All their caps have this disclaimer "PLEASE NOTE!!! As of 4-21-2021, these caps will not be available for purchase! No orders will be filled"

Oh the Chains that Bind Us

This is the set up at our range. Loading area directly behind the shooting bench so not a lot of walking involved. At our annual club match we do a Fer-du-Lac relay shooting from the bag. Targets are set at 100 yds. Everybody marches up to the 75 yard line, shoots the 25 yard shots, move's back...

Glad you're thinking about it again. Might want to put your location in your avatar and see if somebody local can help get you started.

    Swabbing between shot for safety.

Regarding ridiculous rules, our club used to have a requirement for flintlocks to have a blast shield set up on BOTH sides of the gun. Took years to get rid of that one and it was universally ignored in the meantime which is the unfortunate side effect of stupid rules. Regarding the must wipe...

    Ramrod battered balls

He's a member of the Hungarian shooting team so I'll take his credentials about shooting over some random guy on the internet any day. If I want to do crack, then I'll get in touch with a crackhead. You must have some hellacious crud rings. My experience has been the ramrod doesn't bounce...

Pretty much the same procedure I use. Gets me down the last 1/8” to the mark on my ramrod.

What are the Woods Walk rules?

Not sure if this is for a large group shoot or only a few people, but using targets that have to be reset tends to really slow things down for a large group as the range has to be shutdown to do the reset. Hanging steel targets work without resetting. For "one shot" targets like potatoes we make...

Helped a new muzzleloader get started yesterday

Probably in his 50's. Our gun club has several youth programs (Boy Scouts, Junior Precision rifle team, shotgun, etc.). I did a youth intro to muzzleloading class before the pandemic hit. Hoping to get it going again in the near future. But, young or not, a new muzzleloader is a good thing.
