Helped a new muzzleloader get started yesterday

Was out shooting my flintlock at the club's 5-Stand yesterday, when I was approached by another member asking if I knew anyplace that had percussion caps. He had apparently just finished building a traditions kit and while he had found powder (pyrodex) he was SOL finding caps. Ended up digging...

Cost of shooting muzzleloading shotguns for me.

Did the math for my 20 ga flintlock. Using 1 oz shot, 70 gr FFg Goex, the usual overpowder, cushion and overshot card wads and figuring 70 shots per flint my cost came out to 36.45c per shot. Like a lot of people here, I get my shot at Sportsmans for $45 a bag. My powder is purchased in 25 lb...

What does a longer barrel add to a rifle's ability that a shorter one gives up ?

As others have said you get a bit more velocity and a longer sight radius. The front sight on a longer barrel will also cover a smaller area of the target (assuming both sights are of equal width to begin with). I've also found my 46" barrel brings the muzzle and ball into the focus area for my...

    Shooting over snow ?

FWIW, shooting over snow or a sheet to look for unburnt powder is something that makes the rounds on Internet forums. Haven't seen any documentation that shows it being done back in the 17-1800's. Unless of course "old timers" refer to people who bought TC Hawkens back in the 70's and were...

    Many misfires first time shooting

Based on the pictures your flint is dull and worn out (rounded front edge and short). Based on your comments, it's most likely the flint that came with the gun so it more than likely is dull and worn out. Before you do anything else, get some new flints and try them. As stated TOTW has flints...

    Flintlocks in the humidity

I'm no expert on BP manufacture, but my understanding is glazing and graphite reduce moisture absorption. Has your home-brew been treated that way? If not, that may explain your problem. I shoot in western Oregon. Right now the humidity is 86%. Pretty typical. Rain and fog is the norm during...

    How does that even happen?

Pedersoli 20 gauge flintlock double shotgun

I’m lucky in that my club‘s clays fields are all automated so I can go out by myself and shoot skeet/trap/5-stand/sporting. Since you already shoot a percussion gun, I’m assuming you have your loading system worked out to get thru a round. One thing you need to figure out is how you will handle...

Experience with .32 on steel targets?

I shoot my .32 on steel silhouettes at 40 m (sized for a .22) and 50 meters (standard size chickens). I believe the 50 meter steel is 3/8" thick. These are the falling targets set on a steel rail. Using 20 gr FFFg Goex and a home cast pure lead .318 RB there are no ricochets. The ball just...

10 lbs BP Now Or Wait

Been buying 25lbs every two years for a long time now. Shooting .54, .58 and shotgun I tended to go thru a little over a pound a month. Price wise, buying in large amounts just made sense given the volume of shooting I was doing. This is the first time I haven't been able to buy it when I wanted...

    Cleaning the barrel

You wipe whenever accuracy deteriorates or loading becomes difficult. Only you can determine when that is.

    Kibler .40 SMR order

Sighting in distance is more a function of intended purpose than anything else. No sense sighting in at 100 yds if all you intend to do is shoot squirrels at 25.

    Kibler .40 SMR order

Been shooting my Kibler .40 since spring of 2021. Sighted dead nuts on at 50 yds. 40gr FFFg Goex, drill patch, spit lube and a .395 home cast ball. From the bench on a calm day, it groups under 2 3/4" at 100 yds. 50 yds is sub 1" groups. Did my cold clean barrel POI test at 50 yds (first shot of...

Please educate me on side hammer Percussion rifles

I suggest you ask around at your muzzleloader club and see what the winners are using. Hell of a lot better than internet opinions.

    Pedersoli Mortimer flintlock Rifle purchase

I've been shooting mine for almost eight years now. Bought it from Flintlocks etc., when talking with the owner he had stated his personal rifle shot the Hornady Great Plains bullet very well. Believe the .54 GPB has been discontinued for a few years, though. I would guess a similar conical in...

HELP: Ramrod Thread and Tip Clarification

Highly recommend you use a dedicated steel rod with a bore protector to clean with. A quick forum search will reveal a number of posts asking how to remove separated loading rod tips from the bore. Save the loading rod for field use. Don’t own a Traditions, but a quick perusal of their website...

    Trouble…

For future reference a stuck ball can be dealt with by dribbling some water down the bore and letting it soak for awhile. This usually ends up softening the fouling enough so the ball can be fully seated and fired. It would probably allow you to seat your stuck ball and all the accumulated gear...
