    Fowler/Trade Gun or Proper Shotgun?

For a good read try Bob Brister's Shotgunning: The Art and the Science. He actually did real world testing across all the common US gauges to include firing at a long towed trailer at various ranges and speeds to study the effects of shot stringing. Also tested shot hardness, wads, etc.. Side...

    Spokane Washington Muzzleloading supplies??

October Country is in Hayden, Idaho. Not sure if they have a store front or if they carry caps, etc., but you might give them a call and see.

No more trail cameras allowed in Utah

From the article: "After conducting two surveys, the DWR determined that the majority of the public was against the use of devices that transmit images and footage in real-time for hunting purposes." Pretty sure the cameras that transmit pictures in real time were what finally tipped the...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Given the only problem is vertical orientation, run out is largely irrelevant as it is easily corrected with a sight adjustment. We're only talking about taking approximately .07" off the top of the front sight to get it on at 50 yds, so I'm pretty sure its tall enough.

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

All this probably indicates you are also shooting low at 25 yds. As far as I can tell from reading thru the posts is you have not benched the gun at this distance but only shot it offhand and gave a vague "tad low" or "may have been around two inches low" answer as to where it hits. Shoot the...

Anyone here shoot 25 yard offhand match's?

Our club holds a monthly match where we shoot two 25 yard relays, two 50 yd relays and one 100yd relay offhand. There's also a 50 yd cross stick relay and a 25 yard pistol relay thrown in for good measure. Targets are scored by the center of the ball. I recently switched to a .40 Kibler SMR (yes...

    One shot

Any gun I might hunt with gets a cold, clean barrel POI test. If I show up at the range on a perfectly calm day, the first shot is from the bench at whatever range the particular rifle is sighted in for. It might take weeks/months to get enough calm days for a meaningful "group". My latest test...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

The ball will cross the line of sight at two points. As it exits the barrel it is below the line of sight. At around 12 yds from the muzzle the ball should cross the line of sight where it will be above the line of sight until it reaches your sight in range when it again crosses the line of...

    Backyard ranges

Never underestimate people's ability to do stupid stuff. My home club has very large "baffles" set down range at about the 20 yard mark (see picture). They serve as both protection from errant rounds going over the down range berms and have a coating on them to dampen sound (we're surrounded by...

    Noob issues

" I run a brass brush and dry patch down the barrel between groups" This statement stands out as being different from common practice. I'm a spit patcher, not a swabber (whole 'nother topic) but brushing and swabbing with a dry patch is a departure from just swabbing with a damp patch. A dry...

Lead shot, washed, plated, magnumized or otherwise will not harm a shotgun barrel. For more information than you probably really want to know: Understanding Lead Shot Quality: Part 2

Carrying my Pedersoli Double Shotgun in the field

Like most firearm manuals their lawyers are heavily involved. Went online to Pedersoli's "muzzleloading guns owner's manual" and found the following for percussion doubles: "With one hammer placed on half cock position and the other on a rest position (down), (NEVER PLACE BOTH HAMMERS AT HALF...

First day with first flintlock. Didnt go well...

Until you get the rifle firing reliably don't try finessing the pan charge. Just fill the pan all the way up to the bottom of the touch hole.

First day with first flintlock. Didnt go well...

There is something off about the container on the left. As far as I know, GOEX BP has always come in flat sided containers like the one on the right (metal and the newer plastic). Substitute powders tend to come in round containers. In addition the label doesn’t look like a GOEX label and it...

    Nice pattern.

This is so full of vagaries as to be pretty much useless. Exactly how much shot by weight and what ratio of 7's to sixes? What is your "stride" length? The powder shown is claimed to look like 4 F, but it sure looks larger to me. The standard for patterning a shotgun is a 30 inch circle, not...

What am I doing wrong - Confused Update

That's not oil, its burned powder. Wipe/brush it off the pan, frizzen and flint before firing the next shot.

Has the shortage of Modern Ammo Caused a Resurgence in Black Powder Shooting?

I'm assuming you are down in the Eugene/Springfield area. Up here in Portand, (TCGC) I haven't seen any new BP shooters. The number of suppository shooters has declined or their range sessions have been curtailed due to the ammo shortage. We are a private range with a year + waiting list for new...

PRB in a Fast Twist at Short Range

FWIW, a soda can is 2.6” in diameter. The 10 ring on my target is 3.3”. The pictured 10 shot group would have hit a soda can at least 5 times and scared it real good with two more. Again, flintlock, one handed , unsupported.

PRB in a Fast Twist at Short Range

The pistol group was shot one hand, unsupported with a flintlock pistol. The inaccuracy comes from the shooter not the gun, load and twist rate. From a bench the pistol is perfectly capable of hitting a pop can and a lot smaller targets right on down to a quarter.

    Target Pistol

[/QUOTE Ore-gone local shoot. Very nice. Just one 25yd target is the whole match? ...No 50yd?...c This match was our annual club championship. As I said, they set this thing up 30 some odd years ago and we pretty much try to shoot the same match every year. Keeps the scores on the trophies in...
