    Leather wads???

As to the ground hog hide, the "Fox Fire" books mention it as very tough and the preferred material for banjo heads. Good enough for me and I am definitely going to try all kinds of leather for wads and patch. Betcha it cuts down on the smoldering big time too.

    Coned barrels/shredded patches/accuracy

Smokehouse. I have coned three barrels, one of them a smooth .69 one .32 and one .54. I did not notice any difference in blown patches or accuracy only noticed easier starting. One thing I have been doing that seems to help is use over powder patches on all. This seems to keep things going...

Thanks for the correct spelling for Meerschaum, couldn't find it any way using my "interpretation" of the word. I have tried some original type rope tobacco and also English plug cut which is the discs sliced off the rope which you then crumbled before use in your pipe. No wonder they could feed...

    nervous about using true black

Really my point was to help keep flinters, particularly new ones, from wasting money on the "alternatives" and avoid the frustration I had when trying to use Pyrodex in my first flintlock many moons ago.

    nervous about using true black

Y'all must all shoot cap guns and I have never found any of the substitutes that well work even a little bit in a flinty.

Had a great grandmother that was captured by Indians and eventually the ransom, which included a horse 6 blankets and a slave boy was paid so she could come back. Smoked a clay pipe and my mom says she would send her to the store with $.05 to buy a penny pipe and three cents of tobacco and could...

Had a couple good antler pipes but always broke like cobs do after a while. Think the juice builds up in the antler and just swells it apart. Have seen homemade ash wood pipes that were 40 years old though.

Again, thanks for the comments. I generally smoke a blend I make from Austins out of Cavendish, Half and Half and English plus. Add a couple shots of whiskey to a pound and shake well and let "fester" for a couple weeks to smooth and blend it. Have clay, brier, cob and miercham (?) even spell...

    Lighting your pipe....

Windage, I usually use the fire fungus found around here on birch trees. I find if it is sunny that the burning glass is fast as the flint to get it the fungus going. Otherwise I borrow some fire on a stick from someones camp. The little tongs work well too, for coals. Found that cheap tobacco...

    Point of aim

Thanks all for the reply's. Have lots of barrel left and the front sights are back a bit if this goes wrong but creating uneven pressure at the muzzle seems to be raising things well. The pattern was nice and tight just low. Only wondering if anyone had experience doing this so could give...

    Point of aim

Had problem with smooth 50 shooting 8 in low at 25 yds. Cannot or will not file the turtle front sight any more. Acquaintance recommended filing the barrel in side on the bottom to raise the pattern instead of adding rear sight or bending. Actually seems to have worked and raised the pattern...
