    best made 1858 Remington

Thanks gent's I don't mind paying more money for more gun. It seems the nicer models will not accept the cartridge conversion. Do I really even need that conversion? I figured it was better to have and not need than to need and not have...LOL Thanks again for all your help...much...

    Brass Hawk

roger that i get it. like on a nose cap for a old hawken or sharps. sounds like fun. i cast my own round balss for my .50 so i can at least melt it. pouring it into the right spot without 3rd and 4th degree burns might be tricky though. whn i'm itching for that manouver i will definately...

    modified hawk

Trent i have no idea what they call it. as for the lacing in front rather thatn in back. again i have no idea. at first i planned on putting it in back since it makes sence that eventually i will miss and smack the lacing and possible fray it and lose my leather "doohicky". although i can...

    Brass Hawk

thanks Packdog. ok how did you get all of that metal inletted so nicely in the handle. it looks like the wood has grown around it. that's not so easy. i have inletted a buttplate and toe insert and that took me almost forever and was covered with inletting black for a long time. LOL. --KJ

    Brass Hawk

thanks Packdog. i'm not sure i'm up to that level of modification yet. i have a feeling if i tried that right now i would stike a piece of wood and pull away leaving the front of my hawk in it. yours looks really good. i think i'll stick to mod'ing CS hawks for a while --Drake

    modified hawk

yup i did post it over there. that's where i got the idea from. some guys have done some really nice things to CS hawks. i had just been to Dixon's Gunmakers Fair and saw some very nice hawks. but i could not afford them without getting that same hawk thrown at me by the wife. LOL. so this...

    modified hawk

i used a half round file. ya it took a while to get it to that point. i've since bought a belt sander and grinder. that would have made short work of it. i filed in some flats around the eye like i see on all of those really nice hawks.

    lets see some belt knives

    modified hawk

i picked up a cheap Cold Steel Trailhawk and did a little modification to it. first i removed all of the paint/finish. i had to heat it up and hammer the flats to take the bends out of it. then i contoured the bottom edge to give it more of a beard. shortened the handle a couple of inches...

    Conicals or powerbelts?

I have a T/C .50 Hawken and i have used 90 grains of GOEX 2F and a 295 grain copper jacket HP Powerbelt(they were made by Big Bore Express back then) which shot regular 1" CTC 3 shot groups at 50 yards. I only changed to a hand cast roundball because I wanted to work up another load. For that...

    Aging Deer Antler?

will these methods work for bone as well? i was told that i could put it in my meat smoker to get a nice browned effect.

    assembled my first knife...

if you guys are looking to use a deer leg bone make sure it's a big deer. i tried to use a thigh bone from a big doe and it wasn't even close to being big enough for this 7.5 inch blade. i had to get a elk bone from Gary. he is going to help me with directions on how to make a sheath for it...
