modified hawk

i picked up a cheap Cold Steel Trailhawk and did a little modification to it.

first i removed all of the paint/finish. i had to heat it up and hammer the flats to take the bends out of it. then i contoured the bottom edge to give it more of a beard. shortened the handle a couple of inches. wrapped it in some leather and finished it with some browning agent.

this all took a lot more time than i imagined it would and my respect for blacksmiths has grown accordingly. i figured i would try modifying one before i made my own. well i have some more reading to do on the subject. LOL.

What did you use to contour the bottom edge?

i used a half round file. ya it took a while to get it to that point. i've since bought a belt sander and grinder. that would have made short work of it. i filed in some flats around the eye like i see on all of those really nice hawks.

 

Nice job, those things are butfugly when they're new.

yup i did post it over there. that's where i got the idea from. some guys have done some really nice things to CS hawks. i had just been to Dixon's Gunmakers Fair and saw some very nice hawks. but i could not afford them without getting that same hawk thrown at me by the wife. LOL. so this is was a cheap way to kind of have the same thing. it needs some more refinement. the leather is a little to thick. and the handle is not so visually appealing. i've seen some nice mods done to the CS Riflemans hawk as well. maybe that will be the next project.

Is there a reason to have the stitching on the leatherwork towards the front vs. the rear? And what is the term for that leather? Thanks.

Trent i have no idea what they call it. as for the lacing in front rather thatn in back. again i have no idea. at first i planned on putting it in back since it makes sence that eventually i will miss and smack the lacing and possible fray it and lose my leather "doohicky". although i can only afford CS hawks i dream at night about these really nice hawks he puts his lacing in front so who am i to argue. LOL.
