    Finishing Cherry Wood Stock

Easiest way to darken cherry is to exposed it to light. Just few hours in the sun will darken it. A few days will make a big difference. Then finish with boiled linseed oil. Together you will get a nice natural dark color.

Though I have achieved NRA's Master classification shooting modern high power, I have no experience with muzzleloading and am having a frustrating time achieving accuracy with my Hawken style rifle I just finished building. What are the important factors in consistent accuracy with...

    Question about Target

Do you folks use adjustable sights on your rifles or do you use fixed sights zeroed to a specific distance and adjust your aim at other distances? Also do you shoot using a target sight picture where the black sits atop the front sight blade or do you shoot point of aim?

    Question about gunstock blank

I've got a beautiful piece of 2.5 inch thick piece of extremely curly maple that is only 6.5 inches wide. Most of the longrifles I've seen have a steep drop on the butt and would require an 8" piece of wood. Is there a traditional style that I could use get a stock out of this 6.5" piece of...

    Source for black powder

I stopped by my local gun shop the other day to pick up some black powder. Wouldn't you know the only source for 30 miles stopped selling it. Apparently the feds are making it too difficult to sell. Where's the best place on the web to buy black powder at a reasonable price?

    Help with cleaning between rounds

Thanks for all the answers and ideas. Before I got a chance to check your suggestions I came up with the idea of using alcohol. I filled a little squirt bottle full of denatured alcohol and soaked a patch. It evaporates instantly and does a great job of cleaning the barrel. As for the difficulty...

    Help with cleaning between rounds

Any suggestions on cleaning between rounds. I tried some T/C lubed cleaning patches but they are too gooey and get stuck when I pull them up and out of the barrel. What size patch should I use for a .50? What should I use as a cleaner/lubricant in between shots?

Hard time driving ball down barrel.

So I finally got my Hawken style rifle ready to shoot and took it to the range. It shot great, but it was very difficult driving the ball down the barrel. I actually had to hammer on the ball starter tool to get it in the first few inches. Then if I didn't run a cleaning patch down the barrel...

Question about cleaning a Hawken style rifle

Thanks for the reply. The reason I ask it that in T/C Hawken manual it never mentions removing the breech plug, but it does talk about reinstalling it. Confusing.

Thanks for all the responses. I had thought about the plating solution, but had never thought about blued screws. That sounds like it would look nice. Thanks.

    Source for silver screws

I want to replace all the brass parts on my Hawken style rifle with silver. I have no problem making the parts out of silver, but I can't find a source for silver screws. Do you gun makers make your own screws or do you have a source you could share?

    Where to install rear sight

I need some guidance here. I'm installing a buckhorn style sight on my Hawken style rifle. The original rear sight was installed halfway up the barrel leaving a very short sight radius. Are there are any rules as to where on the barrel it should be installed?
