Wick, that is a pretty sweet looking knife there. How do you cut the slot for the blade?

Man that's a nice hawk. I agree with ya'll, it's been really hot. I was planning on doing more this summer but it has been really cooking here in east Texas. It was 109F yesterday.

    Wooden hand planes

Here's a place for planer blades, http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=60009&cat=1,41182,43698&ap=1 www.woodcraft.com also has some planer blades but I do not know if they make them for wooden planes or not.

    Wooden hand planes

Depending on what kind of tools and experience you already have, you may want to look into british infill planes. Here is a link to some plans for a block plane and I think a jack plane. It is about the easiest way to make an infill plane. Silver soldering is fairly simple to do. They show you...

    Goofin around

If that's what you call "Goofin around" then what kind of stuff do you do when you get serious? Looks really nice by the way,

    DIY Anvil?

I get it now. RR tracks are kinda rounded and now that I think of it, I did grind mine flat whenever I ground the horn. it took a long time to do that much grinding...

    DIY Anvil?

One more note, you can do a lot more if you have it properly attached to a good, solid, heavy base. The stand makes a bigger difference than some might think, especially with a lighter anvil.

    DIY Anvil?

What do you mean by cutting off the crown? For about the first year or two that I started smithing I used a piece of rr track and I did not do anything to it other than use a good heavy stand and grind one side into a horn. There is a welder that lives a few hundred yards behind me and he welded...

    Euro Style 18th c. Dagger

That is really nice wick. It seems like daggers are difficult to make but the results make it worth while.

Help with a Confederate style D-Guard Bowie knife

Thanks again Wick. I am going to draw out my design here pretty soon and get started on it. I learned a long time ago that it is easier to erase and re-draw a line than add to add on that extra piece of steel that I should not have cut off a few minutes ago  I will post some pics when I...

Help with a Confederate style D-Guard Bowie knife

Would the steel be soft enough to peen or should I braze or solder something else onto the tang for that?

    Blister steel

This is definitely something new for me. It's kinda interesting. Wick, thanks for the link.

Help with a Confederate style D-Guard Bowie knife

Thanks guys for the info. I figured that they would not be that complex because they would want to make as many as possible as fast as possible. What is the best way to attach the guard at the end of the knife? Should I thread the end of the tang and screw on a pommel or should I peen the tang...

Help with a Confederate style D-Guard Bowie knife

I am wanting to make a confederate style D-guard bowie knife. I want it to be as period correct as possible so I was wondering if you guys knew of any places or had any pictures that I could go and see some of those style knives that I could get my design from. I know what they look like but...

    Antler grip long knives

You can soak the horn for 30-45 days and yes, it will soften so you can force the antler onto the blade. You have to give the horn plenty of time to dry once you get it on the tang though and before you peen over the the end. the horn will shrink a little. You can always drill it though.

    Spike tomahawk with Weeping heart

That is 6-7 hours of actual work, I forgot to mention that there is time when I don't do anything like when I am annealing and heat-treating the hawk, waiting for stain or sealer to dry on the leather and the handle and just things like that.

    Spike tomahawk with Weeping heart

Thanks for the compliments. I have not timed it exactly but It takes something around 6-7 hours if I don't start daydreaming or anything

    Spike tomahawk with Weeping heart

Here is a spike hawk I just finished, forged from a 24oz ball peen hammer. This is the first hawk that I made with a weeping heart cut-out. I drilled 2 holes that slightly over lapped and then filed the rest. On the sheath and the leather wrap on the handle has a sort of different border. I...
