What do you guys lube your C&B revolvers with?

Back in 1980 when I bought my Remington I bought at the same time a number of tubes of Navy Arms revolver sealant in yellow tubes. That stuff may not have been made in decades now. I decided to keep one unopened just to have one so it's around my house somewhere. CVA used to make something...

    Davy Crockett King Frontier

Strange coincidence this discussion would come up now. Just this past Friday evening Grit TV aired the Davy Crockett movie which I believe was made from the first three episodes followed by the Davy Crockett and the River Pirates movie made from the last two episodes I believe. I wasn't born...

Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

I used to wipe between shots many years ago and from time to time I would have misfires. I thought about it awhile and reasoned when I load a patched ball that would be pushing some of the fouling down the bore, hence cleaning it some, but the fouling would be on top of the powder charge, not...

    replacement for TC bore butter

Ox Yoke 1000 Plus Wonder Lube is basically about the same as Bore Butter. I used it for a number of years til I switched to Mink Oil. I still have some precut and prelubed patches I ordered some years back and every so often use them, but I usually lube a strip of ticking with Mink Oil now and...

Review on the Pedersoli Austrian 1798 musket

I don't know about your particular musket but some manufactures use steal with a brass washing over them instead of actual brass where brass was used on the originals. Too much elbow grease and/or alot of use will cause the washing to rub off. If your brass is discolored that may be why--it...

    Hello, New member from MN

Welcome from SC. I like the same thing you do. I've been a Civil War collector for about 44 years now and have quite a few of the originals.

Best way to unload after an unsuccessful hunt?

I've fired flintlocks practically exclusively for about 25 years or so now, except cap and ball revolvers and Civil War muskets in musket matches. I used to pull the ball from my flintlock when I got back to my truck if not having fired it. I found when I ran a patch down the bore it was as...

    Buck vs Doe

You're exactly right. What I was referencing was strictly for eating purposes, but still you're exactly right about the taking of so many deer and the reason for doing so. I don't know if that was why Virginia had a conservation law that far back or not, but possibly so. Virginia was settled...

    Buck vs Doe

I would imagine in the colonial days they would shoot whatever was available for food. I've read the old hunters of that era actually preferred bear meat over deer, believing the deer taste was inferior. Interesting to see there was a conservation law in Virginia as far back as 1635: I never...

    Full stock Hawken

Great looking rifle. I've heard there are no documented original Hawken fullstocks. Is that true? What is the barrel length on your's? Love that forest also.

    “Dry ball”

I learned about 30 years ago I can't run my mouth while loading or this would happen to me. On occasions when I wasn't sure if I had poured in powder I have tilted the barrel down to make sure. Each time I have always used a ball puller; bought one of those CO2 dischargers but never used it.

    Larger Flash Hole

My first flintlock was a Pedersoli Kentucky. Most aggravating thing ever. The touch hole was so small the only thing you could get in it was a nipple pick. The liner was coned on the inside and after each shot I would put the nipple pick in and try to angle it some on the inside to clean it...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

I just want to clarify what you mean. When you say "everyone" are you referring to shooters or to pistols now being supplied with spare cylinders by manufacturers? In a period of just over a year now I have bought four Colt Ubertis, an 1849 Pocket Model, 1862 Police Model, and a Whitneyville...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

It sounds like you're referencing old originals. Most probably if they had spare cylinders they would have been separated from the guns eons ago. That would be almost like finding the shoulder stock with an original military issue Colt M1860 Army. I've been a Civil War collector for almost 44...

    Still reading print media?

The one I really miss is Colonial Homes from the 1980s and 90s. My wife and I always enjoyed that. Lots of houses 200 to 300 years old in that one, everything from farm houses dating from the late 1600s to early 1700s to mansions and in each issue a section on historic properties for sale.

    Still reading print media?

All I read is print. Muzzle Blasts, Muzzleloader, American Rifleman, North South Trader's Civil War, Traditional Homes, Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Alumni News from The Citadel, the publication from American Battlefield Trust, and all books I order from the History Book Club...

Do you think that modern ML firearms have any investment value?

If one were to buy a factory produced firearm such as Pedersoli, etc. the only reason it would cost more in the future would be inflation and production costs increasing. Perhaps if a particular model by that manufacturer would be discontinued it might increase in value slightly more, but...
