    .45 Power

My first M/L whitetail kill was about 50 years ago and it was done with a 45 cal flintlock. Distance from end of nose to muzzle of rifle about 3". Split skull in half and down the little buck went. Good eating!!!!! I was sitting behind one of those rock piles in a Wisconsin farm field watching a...

    Lymen 54 Great Planes Hunter

The fellow that gave you that info may and probably is one fine man. He may just be a little biased about the subject. Gather all the knowledge you can from him and if some of it doesn't sound right check it out but don't discard this well of knowledge just because of one of his opinions. FRJ

    Trouble with 100 yard zero

Right at the moment I don't know the height of the sights. I have to go in monday for a knee replacement so I wont get back to this till after I've recovered. Probably a month or more. I'll post on what I find soon as that happens. FRJ

    G.P.R.

I have a GPR in 54 cal and percussion ignition. It is a very good rifle that shoots better than I can. Only thing I would like is bolts thru the wrist from the tang to the trigger assembly.Kinda like the Hawken rifles were. I hope to do this during the winter. Very accurate with real black...

    Trouble with 100 yard zero

I'm using a 6 oclock hold on a 2" bull and hitting exactly dead center. That would be 1" high at 30 yards. 6" high at 60 yards may mean as others say that its really high at 100. I'll try the large backer as already suggested and get back here and report. In the past however if I was on at 25 a...

    Trouble with 100 yard zero

Here are the parameters. 45 cal flintlock with 42" barrel. Load 70 gr of 3F powder. Primed with 4F powder. .445" round ball patched with .015" pillow ticking. Shooting is done off a bench using Caldwell front and rear rests. I have over 50+ years of shooting experience with many hundreds of guns...

Anybody in NY know where to find black powder?

I also buy my real black from powder inc. Good company and you can get 5# lots but 10 is far cheaper as the hazmat fee is the same whether its 1# or 25# therefore the more you buy the cheaper it gets. FRJ

My gun loves 2F? Bah! Humbug!

I remember back when dragsters were just breaking 200 MPH. They had to start real slow to get to that speed. If they cut a much faster et the top speed would be slower. As it relate to rifles I dont think it does at all as the bullet starts slowing as soon as it leaves the barrel. There is way...

    Sling Attachments

I have a set up on my GPR that attaches to the ramrod thimble and screws into the butt stock. it clamps on the thimble and I have a similar one on a Winchester 94. Never had any problems with either one.FRJ

    Lyman Arperature Rear Sight 57SML

If you don't want to pay for it dont get it. Simple!!!!! They are a high quality sight and well worth the money to those that want to get the most out of their rifle. Take it or leave but quit crying about it.FRJ

    Do you prefer percussion?

I enjoy both. I have a new to me 45cal flintlock that I'm going to try for deer this year or next depending on my knee surgery. I have a 54cal cap and its my go to elk rifle. IF I was limited to one or the other it would be the caplock but I hope I'm never stuck having to make that choice. FRJ

Cold browning Lyman .54 GPR Barrel

I browned my 54 GPR and did remove the front sight to brown the barrel. The rear was already out as I use a lyman peep because of my old eyes. I also did all the rest of the furniture and the Laurel mt worked great. Just do it exactly as the directions say. FRJ

    Excellent bore light

Here's my second on the bobber lights. I like the green as I haven't seen the yellow. The red is too bright of something as I can't see well with them. They only cost a dollar or so and last a long time. A muzzleloading store turned me onto them when I asked about bore lights that I used to buy...

    Hunting load for my GPR

I've killed lots of elk with both longbow and rifle just never a M/L. Hope to solve that deficency soon as my leg is good to go. Wont be this year though as the surgery is in September. Since I can't walk with it the way it is now its a no brainer. FRJ

    Frankenrifle. Shorty Hog gun.

Man oh man, I really like it!!!! I'd probably want to up the powder charge to 100 gr of 3F but I'd do it in small incriments. Looks like it would really fill the bill for what you intended it for. Great Job!!!! FRJ

    Round Barrel Hopkins & Allen?

As I remember those H&A rifles had gain twist barrels and shot preety well. FRJ

    why does flyers happend

If its the Lyman peep it fits on the tang and the GPR is a hook breech type rifle. I had the same problem with my GPR when I went to the same sight. Since the sights are on two different pieces movement of one will change poi and it only takes a few thousandts of an inch to make it happen. FRJ

    Hunting load for my GPR

My thanks to all you guys. Guess my rifle is good to go but now I have another problem in that I'm getting a knee replacement and that may be keeping me out of hunting this year. First time in 50 years. FRJ

    USPS problem

There is no law regarding M/L guns from being shipped by the USPS!! Your running into an unimformed gvt flunky. Why are you even telling them whats in the box? FRJ

    Looking for a percussion rifle

I've been shooting a Lyman GPR in 54cal for several years now and can tell you they are accurate and well made. If your the least bit handy you can get a kit for under $400.00 and build your own. Mid South usually has some good deals on them. FRJ
