Yes I have done it, it helps prevent the patch around the ball.

I put a leather shotgun sling on mine, attach pull rope to the middle of the sling and pull it up. I bring the gun up level with the ground so the muzzle isn't pointing at me. I also have a leather flint stall on the frizzen, no powder in the pan and hammer down.

Just a note, Jim recommends getting the 20 gauge if you are going to shoot a round ball..The barrel is thicker for the higher pressures. Good luck.

Exactly, Sam & Jake didn't use button rifling, no need too, they were still shooting round balls in the 1840s... :) That is why it is hard to compare a T/C barrel to a properly made round ball barrel.

The stock was stained with Laurel Mountain's Honey Maple. Then sealed with Peramalyn. I browned the barrel with Laurel Mountain Browning Solution. I've used that since the '70s.

.54 caliber, patched round ball, 80grs FFF black powder and a 1-72 twist will do all that needs doing. I do prefer deep, cut rifling over shallow, button rifling for a patched round ball.
