    What got you into muzzlleloading?

17 years ago I was given one as a birthday present for my 13th birthday. It was a way we could go hunting and beat modern gun hunts on federal land. I came to love it so much that I practically only hunt with a blackpowder even during modern gun hunts or sometimes I "may" use my wifes ted...

    Traditions Deerhunter .50

My first ever deer was taken with this rifle. I was with my dad at the time and of course he missed it and it was a very awkward shot at a running deer about 20 feet away directly behind me and I was leaning against a tree. I took the shot and honestly thought I missed it. Got up to take a...

    Most Dangerous Practices....

I know what you mean about the gun sweating. Has happened to me a few times without really thinking about it. I do have the markes on my ramrod, one side is marked for ball and 70grains of powder and the other is marked with buffalo bullet adn 100grains of powder. Not only can I tell if its...

    USPS problem

I just know that some states consider any shootable firearm a Modern gun and it must go through a FFL. You can probably ship to those states but it may get intercepted on the other end because you cannot expect every person to know firearm laws for every state and should be responsibility of the...

    USPS problem

I think I may have mistyped that. I dont ship to those states and was trying to give an example of a state that considers them to be modern firearms. What I was trying to make a point was when people try to ship blackpowder firearms that some postal offices will give grief over it and others do...

    USPS problem

I know some states (New York for example) have to be FFL handled because they consider them modern guns. To get around the shippment issue and I have to admit I have done this in the past. I have shipped the gun in two pieces, Stock and lock on one day and then ship the barrel the next day. I am...

Update to previous Muzzleloader Storage thread...

I saw an awesome homemade gun case made out of a soda vending machine. A lot of effort went into making it and was extremely roomy. What he did is build in an electric dehumidifier with a drain to the outside.

    Traditions Deerhunter .50

We had some pretty nice rifles, TC Hawken, CVA optima and several others to name a few and I was always teased because I brought out the Traditions Deerhunter and not one of the, as they call it "Nice" rifles rather than my old cheap junk rifle. Even once I was able to outshoot the others with...

    Power storage in a horn

My horn was not air tight and had some issues with it, so I just threw it aside for a few years. I was working on my motorcycle one day that devolped a leak in one of the seams in the tank and I purchased kreem tank sealer which is basically a ceramic liquid that dries hard as a rock. you just...

    Baby Oil

actually what I do is keep an old percussion cap tin with crisco in it. I just wipe one side of the patch with crisco and use the edge of the tin to scrape off the extra and then put the ball on the dry side. I have never had any problems. I used to buy led buffalo bullets that were not...

    Baby Oil

I have been using a food grade option for the past 17 years, since I recieved my first rifle at the age 13. I use Crisco, works great for patch lube and does not saturate the powder and great for keeping the barrel from rusting in the bore when in storage.

    Traditions Deerhunter .50

This was my first blackpowder rifle and was a gift for my 13th birthday. Many years later and many different and higher dollar rifles later it is still my favorite by far. Does anyone else have this model and what is their opinions of it. I know its an inexpensive entry level and wondering if my...

    OK....I did the idiot load....

I never pulled the "idiot load" as of yet but never say I wont in the future BUT I have been hunting once and was trying to jump a stream and me and the gun went in and it was in for a few minutes before I could get it out. the cap fell off and the powder became wet. I tried to fire it a few...

    Most Dangerous Practices....

Trying out a new firearm without fully inspecting it first. Had a Army replica revolver in .44 and the timing was off where it did not quite line up with the barrel. Had shaved lead coming out of the gap on both sided of the handgun. luckly no one was around me at the time.

    Dry patch???

I always kept an empty percussion cap tin with crisco in it and did a light wipe with my patch and used the edge to scrape off the extra so it does not saturate my powder. if I am pulling out my rifle after it has sat for a while I usually take off the nipple and put a few grains of powder...

    Bore cleaning

I always just used soapy water, Hot or cold. I dont see where it makes much of a difference. If I have some buildup from a lot of shooting for sitting in the cabinet too long I use a bore brush first. Then I just lube the inside with a light layer of crisco and plug the barrel with a cork when...
