    .530 Ball vs .535

I have been using a .535 ball with a .15 patch with my T/C .54 Hawken and it was a little tough sometimes to get the ball down. Last time I used a .10 patch and it was much easier. Try a .530 ball with the .18 patch and see what happens. Each rifle is different. Don't think there is a standard...

    Rookie Mistake

Good thing to use when putting powder behind the nipple is a specula. That is the thing that covers the end of the scope that doctors look in your ear with. It is like a small funnel. Works great for BP. Grab a couple next time at the Dr. office. If you buy them online, you have to order 500!!

    Rookie Mistake

Went to the range again yesterday. 3 times the rifle did not fire. I knew I had put powder in it. Not sure what the problem was, but solved it by taking out the nipple and putting powder behind it. Put nipple back in and it fired all 3 times. Slowly but surely I am gaining confidence in how to...

    Actually, I was using a .535 RB.

    Rookie Mistake

Will pick up rifle from shop on Thursday, all ready to go again. Going to try a thinner patch, although that was not the problem. Lack of powder was the issue!! It seemed to load fine with the .530 ball and .15 patch. Gunsmith said it was jammed in there real tight and doubted if CO2 would have...

    Will try some .530.

    Rookie Mistake

It is a private club, but they allow the public in most days except when they have tournaments. Cost is $10 for non-members. It is called the Dillman Range and is about 1 mile north of Lincoln on Old Hwy 65. The Hwy 65 bypass goes around it, so you have to go through Lincoln to get to the range...

Have already learned a lot by reading this and other forums. Don't worry, any more issues will be put here.

    Rookie Mistake

Maybe we could hook up at the Lincoln range at some point.

    Rookie Mistake

I was using a .535 ball with a .15 patch. Going smaller on either one of them might make a difference. I was using what was recommended in the Lyman Black Powder Handbook.

    Rookie Mistake

I go to the range in Lincoln, run by the Lincoln Gun Club. Have never been to the Sac Valley range. Would be quite a trek for me, even more so in the next month or so because we are moving about 25 miles further north. That would be about a 100 mile trip for me each way.

    Rookie Mistake

Don't know anyone else in my area that does black powder. There is no place around here to shoot ml guns. I drive about 50 miles to the range I use. I have friends that shoot, but all are into regular cartridge guns. So, I have no choice but to go it alone. No BP clubs within 100 miles either...

    Rookie Mistake

There was another shooter there with a ml rifle. I went over to him and explained what had happened. He suggested what I tried, but pretty much had a "Oh well" attitude. Was hoping he would at least take a look and see if he could help. But he was busy with his own shooting, so I left him alone.

    Rookie Mistake

I did read up on how to get a stuck ball out. Ball puller did not work, nor the CO2. Should have tried the powder in the nipple hole, but was not too comfortable about doing it. Read on another forum about using a grease gun with a zerk fitting...messy but they said it works. Thought it would be...

Thought about doing the powder behind the ball thing, but unsure of myself and did not want to make things worse.

    Rookie Mistake

Took my Thompson/Center .54 Hawken out to the range for the first time. After firing 8 shots, got distracted talking while reloading and forgot to put in the powder!! Ball and wad are nicely jammed in the bore. Tried the ball puller and CO2 with no luck. Took it to the gunshop where I bought it...

    Removing wedge

Mine is pretty tight. Maybe a little lube might help.

    Removing wedge

Is that T/C tool that is steel and has like a hammer on one end and claw on the other?
