Mixing black powder with Triple 7

This is what worked for me. I planned on using 777 from the get go, so I bought Hot Shot nipples and Remington "40% hotter" (essentially magnum) #11s...and still, I got powBANG every time. So I measured the holes in the nipples and found they were a tiny .028". On advise from Britsmoothy here, I...

    Arizona quail!

Thanks, Army and NYgriz! Yeah, I would sometimes cock one hammer and try to pull the wrong trigger. Or get hung up trying to pull the trigger back as I mounted the gun. Really need to practice with this gun. Also, those really fast rising/tilt-away shots got me.

    Arizona quail!

Thanks House, Roundball, and Spike! This was really a treat for me, as I've never hunted over dogs. Years ago, I hunted quail some without dogs, and would loose more birds in the bushes than I retrieved. And these dogs were wonderful at pointing the birds. Gauge is 2, I believe, and the...

    Arizona quail!

I think you're right, BB, bigger cards. My settup is a little different than your's, though: I am using BPI multimetal shotcups with 13 gauge over shot cards. The card fits inside the cup, and forces the pedals against the barrel. I've used a similar load in my CVA Optima, turkey hunting, and...

    Arizona quail!

My associate puts Tuf-foot on those feet. I don't see how they do it, either. Quite often, we'd have to stop and comb out one of the dead cactus cobs. He says he won't even hunt in areas that have jumping cholla.

    Arizona quail!

Thanks, Brit. I took your advice and drilled out the nipples, but I only had to go from .028 up to .035".

    Arizona quail!

Yeah, that would be quite a trick! He's my business associate's German short hair named Guage. He weighs in at 65 to 70 lbs.

    patterned the Pietta S/S today--results & issues

I fixed the 777 ignition problem by drilling the nipples out from .028" to .035". Now it goes BOOM--no more PowBOOM. I got to use the Pietta yesterday for the first time quail hunting--story here Pietta S/S quail hunting story

    Arizona quail!

Well, I finally got to go hunting with my new (to me) Navy arms Pietta double, discussed here 1978 Pietta Photos and here S/S pattern pictures . My business associate graciously invited my to hunt quail yesterday with him and 2 other buddies. We had 6 dogs to help us. We headed out at...

    S/S cleaning procedure--bathtub?

Sprayer sounds like it would get less water on the outside (and between) the barrels. I like it.

    S/S cleaning procedure--bathtub?

Air and WD40 sounds like a good idea!

    S/S cleaning procedure--bathtub?

When I cleaned my new (to me) Navy Arms double, I took off the barrel, removed the nipples, and held the barrel ends under flowing water from the bathtub. Lots of gunk all flowed out the removed nipple holes. Next, I used patches doused in alcohol/Windex mixture with a cleaning jag. Then I used...

Brit, I just may try this. I just need to find a #60 drill bit.

The delay I'm getting is VERY slight, and it seems consistent to me--shot to shot. It happens whether the barrel is dirty or clean. I'm just used to my 209 primed guns going bang immediately.

    patterned the Pietta S/S today--results & issues

Thank Green, Bill, and BB. My wife may have my head if I keep spending money on this stuff! I'm just trying to use items I already have. I may be able to get Goex at Bass Pro, but it is $25! Not many other places sell it. Then I'd have to get some true 12 guage wads and over shot cards. The ones...

Interestingly, there was a noticeable delay before the 777 ignited--something I've never noticed with my inline rifle or shotgun. But it fired every time without cleaning. I installed Hot Shot nipples and used Remington "40% hotter" caps.
