    Widening Loading Port

After talking to Master Gun Smith H. Dykes Reber of The Muzzleloader Shop and watching Kaidos 6 part video I decided to open the Loading Port on my Pietta 1858 New Army so I could load conicals with the cylinder in the gun. Sent it off this morning.

Pietta 1858 New Army and Conicals.

Thanks Treestalker. I think I know which mold you're talking about. I just don't have the funds or place to do my own casting. That's why I was wondering if there were any commercial soft lead conicals avaiable. Thanks again.

Pietta 1858 New Army and Conicals.

I have a NEW Pietta 1858 and I would like to shoot conicals but I don't know if I want to have a gunsmith open the loading port or without removing the cylinder from the gun to load it. I tried Kaidos 220gr but I couldn't get it into the chamber and through the loading port so I have a couple of...

    Rate of twist

Hi Goodcheer. I just bought my Pietta and it's an 1858 New Army. Not sure about the 1860s but if you read my original topic I checked mine and I really believe it's a 1:16 twist. Checked it a couple of times just to make sure.

    Rate of twist

Thanks for the replies and info guys.

    Rate of twist

Well I'm glad they did because I really want to try using either kaidos 220gr or 240gr conicals and the faster twist would be more suitable for stabilizing the longer concials.

    Rate of twist

Actually just checked it only going 4" and it turned 1/4. I also looked and on the frame I found a CM in a square box. Is that the year of production code? If it is what year was it made?

    Rate of twist

I bought the about 3 weeks ago. Not sure about the date code. Where is that located? I'll try running the rod only 4" inches and see what I get.

    Rate of twist

As someone of you know I have a 8" Pietta 1858 New Army. Last night I did some looking and everything I read said that the 1858 has a 1:30 twist. Being curious I put a piece of tape on a cleaning rod and ran it down the barrel. What I got was a 1/2 turn which to me would mean that the rate of...

    Actual RB SIze

I just re-read the Pietta 1858 manual and the suggested ball size is .454 but like I said I'll at least use the .451 jus for fun shooting until I either geet some .454s or after trying Kaidos 200gr and 240gr for fit.

    Actual RB SIze

Well I've just heard that the .454s are better. Tighter fit = better accuracy with the right BP load.

    Actual RB SIze

Is anyone 100% sure that they know the actual size of the RBs that come in the starter kits that Cabelas gives away free with their .44 Pietta 1858 New Army. My digital micrometer only measures in hundredths and not thousandths. When I asked the manager at Cabelas he THOUGHT they were .454s

Initial thoughts on my new Pietta 1858

I think I figured wrong in my last comment. I'll just shoot up the 30 RBs that came in the kit and then work on accuracy loads with either .454 RBs or conicals and Goex 3F instead of the Pyrodex P.

Initial thoughts on my new Pietta 1858

Well I really wish I knew for sure about the RBs in the starter kit. I did check it a digital micrometer and although it only read in hundredths it also had in tenths of an inch. So the actual reading was .45 plus between 40-50 tenths of an inch. So I have a pretty good feeling they're .454s. I...

Initial thoughts on my new Pietta 1858

sounds great. I got the same one about 2 weeks ago BUT the weather here has been so bad I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Anyone know what the actual size of the RBs are that come in the starter kits? I'm hoping they're .454 and not .451s. Oh I was told to use the Remington #10 caps. Right...

    Slugging Pietta 1858 Barrel

Wow at what range were you shooting and was that off hand or with a rest?

    Lee Chamfering tool

Hi all. Would the smaller Lee Inside/Outside Deburring/Chamfering tool and emery cloth be enough to cut and remove the ridge at the chamber mouth of a cylinder so that when a RB is loaded it won't cut a lead ring?

Pietta 1858 New Army and Conicals.

well I've seen several videos made by a Mike Beliveau and as far as concerned he proved that a conical is more accurate and has more muzzle energy with the same powder charge as you'd use with a RB. That's enough for me.

    Slugging Pietta 1858 Barrel

Thanks Claude. After talking to someone else I think I'll forgo slugging the barrel. Apparently the Pietta 1858s have an uneven number of lands and grooves making it difficult to get an accurate measurement. Anyway I think all I'm going to do is chamfer the cylinder chambers slightly so you...

Pietta 1858 New Army and Conicals.

Thanks I appreciate that. Hey have you seen a topic here where some guy sludded the barrel of his 1858 and then had the cylinder rimmed to match the grooves? I read it but now I can't find it.
