where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

Upon closer inspection that white line across the breech is a piece of something Hoyt used to help seal the breechplug threads, Teflon tape maybe, it came off. Finished bore is now .542 (Hoyt measurement) and 7 grooves while the original was 8 and rate was 125 plus shipping.

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

Sent the barrel to Bobby Hoyt a few weeks after my last post here, he had it a few weeks (not where I can look to find out exactly, but I don't believe it was much more than a month) and he returned it nicely packaged. His charge was very reasonable I thought. Here are some before and after...

    Best Kentucky Pistol Book?

Thanks for the suggestions. Herb, I wish I had asked my question here earlier, I would have made you an offer on your copy, as it is, although I haven't seen it yet, that was one I've bought based on the title alone. I've seen the other titles mentioned but was unsure but since they were...

    Best Kentucky Pistol Book?

I'm looking for a book that has good illustrations of Kentucky Percussion/Flintlock pistols. Color better than b&w. Not a book of repros, I have a few of those. What title would you recommend?

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

you referring to making a lead lap? If so, thought about it and would like to try one some time but it's just that, a time issue... as in lack of. I've used steel wool, 3m pads, brass sponge around a jag, JB compound some lapping compound, it's shiny just shiny pits. It's accurate enough for a...

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

I've shot it. It really does a number on the patch, when cleaning it, there's little patch fragments hanging inside the barrel.

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

It's fairly pitted, a well used barrel off of a ml that was given to me. I've spent time cleaning it, used JB non- embedding on it, it shines but still pitted. Might try fire-lapping. Was thinking maybe just bump it up a size. Have seen the smith mentioned above, I've also seen the wait times...

where to get a .50 cal barrel re-rifled

I'm in Southern Indiana, is there a gunsmith who will re-rifle or re-bore a .50 cal. barrel in this neck of the woods?

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

Haven't shot it yet. What I'm trying to do with the post and pics is get a general idea of what those experienced with ml barrels would consider different levels/degrees of pitting to look like. For example the description on my barrel pictured was "light pitting, light use". Some others that I...

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

In your barrel what would you rate the remaining pitting, "light", "mild"? Except for Artificer I'm getting the impression that the take on my barrel is that it would fall in the moderate pitting range. So maybe a description of moderate pitting is where it begins to get dicey whether the barrel...

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

Yep, going to throw everything at it in terms of getting it into shape. This was the first used ml I've bought and there are some others, with varying descriptions of barrel condition that I'm looking at to add to the collection, and while I believe the sellers are giving honest descriptions...

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

those pics cover approx. the first 6-8" of the barrel from the breech, I do have other pics showing the rest of the barrel but due to the lack of light you kinda have to translate shadows, I've made a way to better illuminate the barrel but haven't gotten the pics taken yet. I do have several...

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

thanks for the "moderate" rating, it is a Colerain barrel, would that type of rifling be a problem in re-cutting?

to what degree is barrel rust/pitting

Looking for opinions. Having not seen many examples of barrels with rust and pitting, I'm not sure of the condition of this barrel what would you say that the pictures represent, minimal or excessive, somewhere in between. Any and all opinions, photos of severe pitting would be appreciated.
