Wick I see you posted just before i did. I am in full agreement with you, you are not the "previous poster" i referred to, but Paul.

    frissen hardening

I have never hardened a frizzen but have to disagree with the method described by the previous poster. I am talking in general terms, but to harden steel it is heated to a medium red or slightly above the point where it becomes non-magnetic. It is then quenched in water, oil or air depending...

What is Murthy's soap and Witch Hazel?

Musketman Thank you for the generous offer. I guess our import laws would not be a problem. I have imported various things, mostly books from the USA with little problems. However the total cost of shipping is so high that I believe it would not be worth while sending this on its own. I...

What is Murthy's soap and Witch Hazel?

Hi I have found the piece on black soap very interesting, but it is definitely not common in Southern Africa. Personally I have never seen it in South Africa or neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe and Namibia. Animal fats (hippo was often killed for this purpose) with lye was often used to...

What is Murthy's soap and Witch Hazel?

Thank you all. Saddle soap is available so I guess I will try that and forget about the Hazel. Thanks again.

What is Murthy's soap and Witch Hazel?

I did an internet search and I answered my own question. Perhaps I should rather ask does anybody know about something similar to Murthy's soap supplied in South Africa?

Can somebody please tell me what the above ingredients of Moose milk are? Both totally unknown to me.

    Making Powderhorns

I recently also made my first horn without the benefit of a book or somebody to tell me what to do. I checked out both the abovementioned websites. I note that you only scrape till the horn is smooth. I continued and scraped away all the "gummy" horn till I got to the more fibrous horn lying...

    Lyman 54 Trade Rifle

Chiefs50 wrote: May I ask what size groups you are getting? Load? Do you use the adjustable sight or the "primitive" one? Chiefs50 I saw elsewhere you asked if the trade rifle has shallow or deep rifling. Did you get an answer to you question yet?

    Lyman 54 Trade Rifle

I am not an expert on this, did my Trade rifle's trigger yesterday. See thread "1st muzzle loader and some huntin" in General muzzleloading section." I wanted to get rid of some creep. The trick is to know how far to go and especially to be careful in keeping the angles of the engagement...

    First Powder Horn Finished

Very nice, how do you get the yellow colour? Is this white horn that is coloured in some way?

    1st muzzleloader and some hunting

I bought a Lyman Trade rifle in .54 this week (my first black powder rifle). I finished up the powder horn I made and installed the adjustable sight that comes with the rifle after grinding the top flat. I got some powder and caps, I have spend one evening casting balls and I am measuring rags...

    Stock design and uncomfortable recoil

I see threads on this board where people complain that they are hurt on the cheek by the recoil of their TC rifles. The solution suggested is to remove wood from the comb of the stock, to increase the distance between cheek and comb. Some attribute the whole problem to the rifle not having...

    Horn help urgently asked.

Thank you. I made a fire under a 25 liter tin can outdoors. I will try to pull the insides out now and remove the skin and so on. Do the insides remain loose after the boiling or will they only come out as long as the horn is hot? Time now to try and pull those horns. (8 of them)

    Horn help urgently asked.

Hi I got a few horns from a friend at the abattoir. They are fresh, with pieces of skin bloody stuff still on the ends. I do not have any knowledge about how the horns have to be treated but was told the first step is to boil the horn to loosen the inside part. Being worried that everything...

    Calculating recoil

The weight of the powder charge would have to be brought into Robin's calculations as well. Things like stock shape makes recoil very subjective.
