    cutting and crowning a barrel

Consider a back bore. I did this on an old lever action unmentionable. Made a world of difference in accuracy. You don't have to worry about the front site dovetail being moved, and the reamer leaves a nice clean recessed crown.

    1863 Pocket Remington Canted Barrel

You can also use a coil of very fine wire around the area just forward of the threads, relief cut, before the octagon starts.

Ed Rayl in West Virginia, if he's still working.

    Buck vs Doe

Years ago, I hunted out of a camp in the southern tier of NY, just north of the PA border. The owner and other old timers did not like to shoot does. For the reason stated.above. Unfortunately, they never really changed their thinking. The deer on that property were tiny. A fawn might be...

    NY ML season

I usually do the late muzzleloader season in a blind. It's small, and most of the fowler sticks out the window, but the pan and powder stay dry.

    NY ML season

Nice deer. I'd be happy with it. I hunt the Adirondack foothills where deer are scarce. Been trying for a couple years to take my first deer with a flintlock fowler. Saw a decent buck last week, but too much garbage in the way and never had anything other than a halfassed opportunity to...

    Just about fed up…

Years ago, I had a TC new Englander that was inconsistent. Every once in a while, for no reason, it wouldn't fire. I finally started pulling the nipple and sprinkling a few grains of powder in the nipple channel if I was headed out to hunt with it.

    so hard to wait

Cautiously and carefully, get in with the bow. But you don't want him pushed out. I hunt near my house where there aren't many deer. Come muzzleloader season, there's tons of hunters putting all kinds of pressure on the deer. Movement on camera becomes almost non existent.and mainly after...

Range Test: .45Cal Double PRB deer load

You guys are proving to be bad influences. The only 45's I have are a TC Cherokee and a TC Seneca. Given there reputed desire to crack at the wrist under heavy loads, I don't think I'll be trying a double ball with 100gr charge. Now in have to get another muzzleloader. I'm depressed. Does...

Should I or should I not?

I have a custom built 45 cal sante fe Hawken that I have never fired. I didn't have it built, but it looks like it wasn't fired before I got it. It has Bob Rollers lock and triggers, and a Bill Large 4J barrel. It's basically in pristine condition and I cant bring myself to shoot it.

    Flint Lock Main Spring

There are homespun options if you're handy with heating and bending. I've been using a piece of mouse trap coil spring as a sear spring for several years

    Custom Revolvers

Sometimes I just shake my head at the things people need to start a debate over.

    Another Kibler Hog

A hog hunt is one of my bucket list items. They are very rare in NYS where I live, but spotted now and then. However, it is expressly prohibited by law, to shoot one. According to NYS, if they are hunted, they spread, becoming prolific breeders, and will be a problem. So sayeth the biology...

    Scrimshaw moose antler

That is impressive. It gives people like me, who struggle with crayons and a coloring book, an idea about the kind of time and effort involved in true art.

CLOSED TVM Leman Style 54 Caliber Rifle

Ash can and does have curly similar to maple, it's just not as common. It could be an odd growth maple, but looks like ash to me. Nothing wrong with an ash stock, I'm working on one now. Harder than sh**.

CLOSED TVM Leman Style 54 Caliber Rifle

I would hazard a guess that the wood is white ash.

    TC Pennsylvania Hunter Issue

I have several custom muzzleloaders and they have wood screws holding the tang in place. Never had a problem with it. Just glue a plug in the bolt hole, redrill and put an appropriate looking wooden screw in. No need to over complicate it.

    Shipping to New York

At some point (maybe already) they will likely get around to defining a firearm as simply the firing mechanism in a muzzleloader. Just the lock, whether flint or percussion, will be evil.

    Shipping to New York

I'm from NYS and I will admit that reading and trying to decipher our gun laws is confusing. Further complicated by law enforcement personnel with varying opinions, including NYS Police. I sold a flintlock pistol about a year ago, and went to the sheriff's department to have it removed from my...

    Wheellock paddle butt carbine build

I have a club butt Fowler with a similar rounded butt. I find it hard to keep in place during the shot. That round shape along with lock inertia makes for difficult shooting. But they look great.
