    Austrian Lorenz

So,, the explosion of the propellant black powder charge was sufficient to cause the Lorenz bullet to "accordion" down, which then expanded the bullet and allowed it to engage the riflings? If that is correct, it is the opposite of the Thouvenin System. That is to say, instead of the force...

    Austrian Lorenz

Grayrock Volunteer, Thank you for answering my question. Very interesting. I like to research the Rifle Muskets. Also of interests are the bullets used in the Lorenz. Hopefully the JPG is attached. Do you think their accuracy was comparable to the Minie Ball?

    Austrian Lorenz

I have been researching the Austrian Lorenz. The Wikipedia article on the Lorenz said there are three different versions: short range, medium range and long range. According to the article each of these three versions differed in the in the design of the lands and grooves in the barrel. Has...

    Ramrod tip extending past muzzle

The correct ramrod length on antique military rifle muskets is something that I have tried to understand. So far as I have observed, all the ramrods on original military rifle muskets do not go out past the barrel. But, still the ramrod has to be long enough so that it doesn't go down inside...

    pietta .36 Navy problem

Please help me understand. I bought an old Pietta Model 1860 from a gunsmith that reconditioned and blued it. To shot it I just ordered the Pedersoli Powder Flask, DP 523-44 (.44 Caliber). This flask comes with what I guess is a standard nozzle that captures the correct amount of powder...

PISTOLS OF THE GOOD LORD BIRD

DaveC. Thank you. Yes, assuming, the firearms are correct to this time period; you're right, the larger of the two pistols is one of the Colt Dragoons or the Walker .44. But, it cannot be a Colt Model 1860. This is what I think also. If you get to see the series let me know what you think.

PISTOLS OF THE GOOD LORD BIRD

There is a new Showtime series about the abolitionist James Brown. James Brown is played by the actor Ethan Hawke. His character, James Brown, is shown armed with two Colt percussion pistols. This series is based on actual events and it correctly set in the late 1850s. Can anyone identify...

Percussion cap misfires on new revolvers

Several years ago I also loosened the nipples as LYMAN 54 advised. But, I loosened the nipples too much and this caused multiple chambers to fire at once. As I remember, I loosened them more than half a turn. Please be careful.

Percussion cap misfires on new revolvers

I use to do this also. But, by filing down the sides, I can be sure that the first time the hammer hits, the cap will fire.

Percussion cap misfires on new revolvers

I had this problem with my Model 1860 Pietta. The problem was that the caps did not seat down on the nipples. So, I filed down the sides of the nipples, not the top. This fixed the problem, No. 11 caps slide all the way down and seated properly.

What's the model name of the French Minié Ball rifle Musket?

Pulka, before trying to answer your new questions, let us go back to Question #6 What are the French musket and rifle models used in the Crimean War? Please tell me everything. I found a good description in "Uniforms & Weapons of the Crimean War" by Robert Wilkinson-Latham. One very...

What's the model name of the French Minié Ball rifle Musket?

I found something that may answer you second question. On page 89 the author tells us the following: "By decreeing the "bis" transformation at the beginning of the year 1857 Napoleon III wanted to standardize all the infantry armament to a single type of rifle: the voltigeur model. This...

What's the model name of the French Minié Ball rifle Musket?

Well you need not hope any longer. I will do my best to answer you questions, but one at a time. What an inquisitive young man you are. The first reference in the French book is the chapter titled "The debut of the Percussion The Rifle Model 1840; The origin of the percussion cap." So...

What's the model name of the French Minié Ball rifle Musket?

Pulka, are you OK with the answer(s) you got? I have also been researching the French rifled musket models. It was hard to understand. Finally, I found a book "Du Silex au piston. La grande adventure des fusils reglementaires Francois 1717-1865." Each model has a chapter devoted to it...

The flintlock is a made in India. Identify malfunctions and their elimination

Speaking of flintlocks made in India. Has anyone had experience with the flintlocks offered for sale by Access Heritage in Ottawa. They have some really nice looking ones for $500 to $600 dollars each. I called them up and ask where their flintlocks were made, they told me in Asia.

Pushing percussion caps on with wooden dowel....

I finally filed down all the nipples. Then the caps fit. I tried and experiment, I bought several kinds of nipples to test them. I also bought CCI, Remington and Winchester caps. None of the nipples or caps would allow me to properly seat the percussion caps. Finally, I just filed down the...
