    Caliber / bore question

Wasn’t sure if black powder arms acted differently since the burn rate is so noticeable between black powder and smokeless.

    Caliber / bore question

The English dueling pistols are usually described as smooth bore at around .60 caliber / 22 bore. I have a rifle kit I’m putting together in .54 caliber. I have been thinking of building a pistol in the English dueler style (1820’s or so). .54 is not that different from .60 and is easier to...

    Questions on Flintlock Lock Design

Another question if I may. Some builders notched the patent breech to place the touch hole closer to the powder chamber. Does this have any benefit for quicker ignition? I think this would be a step too far for a build of mine (time and skill involved) when I finally begin.

Ok. Not yet for sale? I looked on their website and didn’t see any.

    Questions on Flintlock Lock Design

I like the look but at 4 3/4” it is much larger than the lock on the Wogdons. Dave Person said his measured under 4”. Some day I want to build a pair of modest replicas of his. L&R has a “Late American” that is the smallest I see they make.

    Questions on Flintlock Lock Design

So what do you recommend in the small size (4 3/8” or smaller) with a waterproof looking pan. Want to make a pistol that looks similar to a later years Wogdon.

    Questions on Flintlock Lock Design

Great info. I don't plan on shooting in the rain but I do like the look of L&R Manton lock but want the size of the L&R Late American lock (4 3/8" vs 4 3/4"). That extra 3/8" is slightly messing up my CAD design for the pistol I would one day like to build. Maybe I was not understanding...

    Questions on Flintlock Lock Design

Three questions. Why is the cock dog legged? Would not a straight cock be more efficient for the use of materials and stronger? Does the shape of the pan matter? Wider vs longer vs deeper? What makes a pan "water proof"? I was looking at a thread on here and the pictures to me seemed to be...

    Inletting / fitting

Thank you again. Found his videos. Quickly looked at one and he was talking about finishing the lock plate which reinforced one of my ideas (probably heard it from him about how to do it that way before). So moving the rounded cut out on the left side of the lock plate back towards the butt...

    Inletting / fitting

Thanks. Guy had a tremendous beard, bald head, and said his wife complains about the noise so he has to stop at 10 pm. Videos were extremely informative even if it was a different rifle style. I'll have to take a look.

    Inletting / fitting

Thanks. Regarding staining a thin slide of wood, I've tried the stain matching when repairing the "gently broken" furniture my wife insists on buying from the furniture store for a discount. Sometimes I'm good, sometimes not.

    Inletting / fitting

Work and kids coming back from college had me busy the past few days. In my picture of the stock looking from muzzle to breech there is a portion about 1.5 inches long that is inletted much more than the rest of the barrel. That is why there is a significant gap all around the tang. Placing...

    Inletting / fitting

Your tang is shaped much differently than mine. I understand the welding but I think that's more than I'm willing to put into this. My tang goes from octagon directly to the long flat tail unlike yours which has the gradual progression from one section to another. I believe the solution to...

    Inletting / fitting

I agree. The inletting was too much on the tang and not enough for the lock. I'm thinking of ways to take up the space - fiberglass bedding like a bolt action? When I attach the barrel to the tang and place it in the stock there is no movement so my concern is the poor fitment of the...

    Inletting / fitting

If you place a straight edge from the wrist to the toe along the stock, is there a "hump" mid way like mine? Toe Line by Prescott Boisvert, on Flickr Stock within the yellow rectangle is mostly straight. It curves away from the ruler in the red box. Not looking to make this a replica, just...

    Inletting / fitting

Hopefully this is a picture looking from the muzzle end to the breech of the tang. Far too much wood on either side. I THINK I know what wood to take off but I need advice. I've been told its easier to take off wood than take it on so I'd like to go the easy route. Tang by Prescott Boisvert...

Hawken kit from Cabela’s I bought about 30 years ago. I’m not sure how to finish the wood to the left and right of the breech plug. The wood sticks above the the angled flat on the barrel. Never found a good picture of how they were originally finished. Not looking for exact reproduction, just...

"Hail Wogdon, Patron of the leaden death..."

Thank you. I’ve been gathering information so I could make a pair of matched pistols in this style. I’ve found better and more complete information here than in the past several years of searching on the web. Please keep the information coming as your time allows.

    Introduction

I signed up a few years ago to view posts and pictures but never introduced myself. I’ve been working off and on for the past 5 years to finish a Hawken kit I got from Cabela’s some 30 years ago. I did 20 years in the Marine Corps and the kit was in storage most of the time. An office worker...
