    Conicals for Kibler SMR

My rifle isn't a Kibler; it's a Colerain with 1:56" twist in .45 cal. I've gotten decent accuracy from the short (200 grain) LEE R.E.A.L bullet. I used stout powder charges and an Ox-Yoke .50 cal felt wad under the bullet. I find it very disconcerting to load: there's a bit of resistance getting...

    Kibler vs. TVM.

I haven't laid hands on a Kibler, but I did receive a TVM Southern rifle in December. I have zero complaints about the rifle, and fell the price was fair.

Most accurate flintlock rifle you own

I just shot my TVM Southern today at 100 yards; I haven't fired a muzzleloader at 100 yards in about 15 years! The load is written on the target. The bottom of that target measures about 7 inches across, which is very close to what my front sight subtends at 100 yards. Shot from sandbags, temp...

    1st time shooting a flintlock

I haven't tried a Traditions rifle, but I did have two 1:48 twist TC .50 cal Hawken rifles; one flint, one percussion. Both shot very well with 60 grains fffG under a .490" roundball and .015" or .017" patch. One plunge of ffffG in the pan.

    Lee R.E.A.L bullet

I got good results in my TC Hawken .50 cal using the shorter Lee REAL bullet (250-grain) with about 85 grains of Pyrodex RS or Triple Seven. I always had a lubed felt patch atop the powder. I also got good results in a TC Hawken flinter with 65 grains of fffg. Considering how well the 320 TC...

    Priming The Pan

I tried it just to see, as real BP was in very short supply locally. Three shots in a T/C Hawken, PRB and 60 grains Triple Seven, went off without a hitch. Mind you, I always plug the vent with a toothpick when loading, so I know there's no fouling blocking the ignition. I still wouldn't hunt...

    First flintlock deer.

Great deer and a beautiful rifle!

Kibler SMR finally finished in cherry

    It's lovely! Enjoy!

    Choosing a caliber/barrel for a flintlock

I took it out today and fired three shots at 25 yards. 60 grains fffG Goex, .018” patch and .440 ball. I need to create a bit bigger rear sight notch for better target acquisition, but easily put three shots into an inch at 25 yards. That combo was really easy to load. I plan to try some .445”...

    Choosing a caliber/barrel for a flintlock

I resurrected this thread to update: I did in fact order a .45 Southern from TVM in July 2021; I took delivery two days ago. It's gorgeous. Fancy curly maple, 42" X 13/16" Colerain barrel, Siler flint lock, Davis triggers. Thanks to all who replied to this thread, and to Hanshi for a little...

    TC flintlock rifle

I just sold my TC flintlock; I'm unsure of the DOM. Mine was a .50 calibre and I would have actually preferred to find a .45! It shot both PRB and REAL bullets more accurately than I expected (the bore looked like new) and sparked perfectly. I even tried firing it (twice) with Triple Se7en...

How do you cock your lock?

I use my thumb on percussion rifles and usually the crook of my pinky finger on flintlocks.

    Beautiful.

    Maxi balls?

If your rifle is a slower twist, consider Lee's R.E.A.L bullet; they are designed to allow a conical bullet to be shot from a rifle with slow twist and deeper grooves. There are scads of threads about them on the web. Downside: the bullets aren't available commercially and you must cast them...

Poll: Will the closing of Goex dissuade you from buying a Flintlock?

I'm in the queue for a rifle from TVM; a Southern flintlock. Just because I live where supplies are scarce, I believe I'm going to get a percussion lock and drum with the rifle. But really, I'd still buy just a flinter and figure something out if the loss of GOEX affected me. I shot Swiss and...

    Failure to fire rate

I’m an average shooter. The only flinter I ever owned used a large Siler lock. I always blocked the touchhole with a wire when loading, only used real FFG, always used 4f in the pan. I fired about 200-odd shots out of her. I had no misfires ever.

The Superstition Of Gifting A Knife, Is It Real?

I don’t think anybody BELIEVES this old tradition, but it’s a good feeling to honour these old superstitions. I have passed on several knives to friends and received a coin in return. My father and some others of his generation (he’d be 88 next month) had an even more stringent superstition...

    Choosing a caliber/barrel for a flintlock

I'm considering it; I just wonder if the swamped barrel would be such a noticeable difference on an already-light rifle. I also need to decide if I want to add another 15% to the cost.

    Choosing a caliber/barrel for a flintlock

So I've gone ahead and placed my order at TVM Natchez. Southern Rifle, Presentation maple, .45 cal, .42" straight octagon barrel, red-stained stock, browned steel furniture. I'll be waiting about a year; good thing I have other shootin' irons to fool with.

    Choosing a caliber/barrel for a flintlock

It varies province to province; some have no legal minimum if I recall correctly. I too have a .40; it seems to be a cut-down Dixie Tennessee cap lock with a .30-inch barrel and a cherry stock. I just figure .45 is as small as I’d like to go.👍🏻
