    Moving to Va.

I live in Salisbury, just up the road from you in Accomack. Limited on the Delmarva, but Delmarva Sporting clays always enjoys seeing the traditional guns and you can bench or off hand shoot at any distance. I also camp at Surry, have since '93 or so as mentioned by another in this thread...

50 cal prb for big game

what about using a 495 or 509 round ball vs. the 490? any difference?

50 cal prb for big game

I consider a successful shot placement as a shot in the vitals, that will inevitably end in death. I know it will not be a drt shot unless I spine him, a brain shot ruins the skull. A solid lung shot, will do any animal in, just want it to get good penetration, so I will work with the 100 grain...

Merry Christmas to me, thanks for the info on the mould. Watch out woodswalk shooters, here I come. Appreciate it.

50 cal prb for big game

You are correct, I did ask for input, opinion and fact on loads for buffalo. I understand a max load at 120 grain, but I will tune into the accuracy of my gun with the different loads. I will include that in my practice to see where it lands me. Please do not think I have my mind made up in...

50 cal prb for big game

Could you enlighten me on the swaged vs hand poured? I use the round lead balls, provided in the red hornady box, .490 size. Been lookin for a mould, I have lead since I use it for keels in the gunning decoys I carve, but have difficulty finding a 490 mould. That has been what holds me up...

50 cal prb for big game

I wouldn't take that combo on a water buffalo hunt either. Give me a beretta for safari maybe, but I am going after american bison, south dakota.

No brown bear mentioned for me. Black bear is just fine.

50 cal prb for big game

I will be experimenting with loads of 90 and 100 grain. I will be able to wait for the right shot, but 50 cal worked then, why not now, right?

50 cal prb for big game

Thanks for the reply. Shot placement is always the critical point, just want to make sure I have the knockdown delivery with it for ethical harvest. Highly likely I will have within a 50 yard shot, but not further than 75 yds.

50 cal prb for big game

I was thinking about trying 90 and 100 grain loads, thinking it would help with impact power. Accuracy is good, so we shall see. Thanks for the reply

50 cal prb for big game

I have read through numerous posts and other discussions, not trying to get into the conical and round ball debates. I shoot a traditional flintlock, made by Jeff Saddler, who apprenticed under Kieth Casteel. It is a .50 cal shriek model, and I currently shoot a 490 ball, 015 patch with 80...

Anyone interested in a eastern PA hunt?

I wish I would have known about this opportunity a little earlier. I would have joined you, brain tan and all. I did a trek like this in Virginia back in 99, snow and sleet all 4 days, no permanent camp, hike and pitch each night. Ron Gilmore, Beaver Larry Fila, Greg price, George Rogers and...

    smoothbore waterfowling

In the majority of my waterfowling experiences, including those that will be replaced by using the smoothbore, I am able to have my shots all within 30 yds or less, with decoying birds. I understand that patterning loads for ducks will be different for swan and geese, however, thinking of how...

    smoothbore waterfowling

Thanks for all the input guys. Looks like I will stay with 12g. I will be using bismuth loads for my shot. Just trying to find someone willing to build it and then of course, I will need input on loads to start with. I will be going after swan in NC and VA. Do any of you know of any smiths...

For all of you who hunt swan/goose/duck with a smoothie, is a 20g good enough? in the market for a smoothbore primarily for waterfowling, but also big game. Can you help me out? Thanks.

    style for F&I and waterfowling

hello everyone, Looking for a good smoothbore for waterfowling using bismuth no-tox shot. My questions for you are these...does gauge make as big a difference as it does related to modern shotguns? what gauge/caliber would you recomend for all around use for fowl and big game? Who builds...
