FOR SALE A nice M.T. Wickham Contract M1816

Hello, if this musket is still available, I'll take it. It will be for a museum that my niece runs. Let me know, thanks, -Karl Seidl

    SOLD Original 1795 Springfield

...If you have something similar, I would be interested. It's for a museum of flight history in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that also has a newly formed early America wing.

If your sale doesn't go through, I'll buy it.

    New to flinch lock

With some practice, you'll learn to command your rifle instead of letting it command you. Don't overload it, that will help. But it's good to learn to use a flintlock; it will soon be the only type of firearm that you'll be able to have. Modern ammunition is indeed high-tech, and the means...

    Dixi Gun Works Disappoints.

You're getting jacked around on prices. If you buy at inflated prices, prices will inflate more. I know many people want their toys now, but I suggest mustering the courage to walk away from a purchase when the product is over-priced. We've been through bizarre market forces that have...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

You'd have to go back to 1929 for gas to be 23 cents a gallon. It went down in price during the Depression, and was back at 23 cents again in 1947. My point is that ML costs have gone up much faster than inflation, and only recently.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

My principle complaint about any aspect of the ML hobby is the soaring costs. When I started, we would order great kits from The Golden Age Arms Company for less than $300! Adjusted for inflation, that would be $617 today. No way you get a good kit for that now. I got my first firearm deer...

Food for thought on smaller calibers for hunting big game.

It's true that many of the rifles displayed in museums are .35 to .48 caliber. These rifles produce higher velocities and behave more like rifles as we understand them today. The men who wielded them usually only had one, and were expert in their use. They could and still can take anything...

    Open iron sights or peep.

If you're planning on hunting, open iron sights will allow you to acquire the target quickly and easily under all light conditions. Peeps can be difficult to use in a woodland environment, especially at dawn and dusk, when most hunting is done.

45 caliber round ball for Deer???

.45 caliber is the minimum for deer hunting in Michigan, but it works very well. It also allows you to use the rifle for other creatures, based on how you load. 25 grains of 3f makes it a great porcupine or fox rifle, and 15 grains is good for rabbits and other small game. Being a one muzzle...

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

In the old days men didn't clean their rifles after every use. They would, however, wipe the bore with a good grease a few times, and pick the touch hole or cone. Bore Butter is a good product for this. Just saturate a patch in bore butter and wipe the bore all the way down and back. Don't...

Food for thought on smaller calibers for hunting big game.

All good points. But remember, blood is not the only means of tracking an animal. They leave countless other signs that tell you everything that's going on with them.

Food for thought on smaller calibers for hunting big game.

.45 caliber long rifles have a good velocity, flat trajectory and hit very hard. The soft lead ball at black powder velocities dumps its energy and expands considerably. This let's the rifle behave like a rifle instead of a giant rock thrower like the larger calibers. When loaded down a bit...

45 caliber round ball for Deer???

.45 round ball from a long barrel gives a flat trajectory and a lot of energy on the target. I've taken deer with a flintlock with about 55-65 grns. of fffg. 50 grns. would likely be enough. It flattens well.
