Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hi Folks, an update and a Mea Culpa / apology. Yesterday, I posted some results of using Lee's REAL 54 cal projectiles in my friends TC 54 NE carbine, caveat it has a rough bore... and then some! I was perplexed by the great 2-3 shot very acceptable accuracy, then a nasty flier... why? My...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Sadly that was pure lead, I even tried various lead and mold temps… I was still 14 thou under the specified widest / driving band. Rather frustrating, we went through 3/4lb of Goex 2Fg with testing, some elation, then a flier so despair… an emotional roller coaster! As I mentioned today, I...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Eureka! I hope this note resolves this thread to a close. I may have discovered the cause of the errant flier REAL projectiles in my friend’s rifle. I was casting various alloys to determine shrinkage etc, and it became apparent that my week old Lee REAL mold, 54 cal 300gr dual cavity...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Thanks, that in of itself implies I’m not crazy… well, not that crazy! All geeks, MLs etc hate the unexplained. This has now become a crusade… I enjoy a challenge… so we’ll see! G’night all. S1 MT

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hey WonkyEye, thanks for the fast response. A few more details, he’s a very seasoned hunter, a very good shot, and we used a Leadsled. Our frustration was the very acceptable 2-3 shot group, then the random one in 4 or 5 shot crazy flier… I checked the crown, no dings… we spent 4 hours at the...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hello folks, I have a frustrating update on the test firing of my buddy’s TC New Englander, BP rifle, 26”, 54 cal, 1:48 twist. As detailed in the above thread, I resorted to scotchbrite, 0000 wool, Kroil and a lot of arm workouts… the results were promising, minute of barn door, to 3-4” at...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Thank God no RedDot, nor suppressor! Testing accuracy is a sum of variables, rifle, bore condition, powder, ball / conical, lube, cap of flint… 2F or 3F etc… You should explore but limit any one time variables to just ONE. I see the use of a scope as fine, if needed. I know of a local MT...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Wow! We’re going to try REAL bullet next week, PRBs as 50 yds were 3-4”. Yours are 3/4”! I saw a similar thread running about Mr Hoyt, depending how this things works out, my friend may give him a call! He feels okay with it this season for PRB use, minute of Bambi, but an inch is...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hi Folks: On the subject of bore polishing and pitting... I hate to ask, there are some folks who chose barrels with holes at both ends, (rumours abound!) they sometimes resort to fire lapping, either to remove a tight spot, or smooth dings or sharp rifling... Has anyone tried something...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hello folks, I posted a request for advice on how to recover a friends rusty 54 cal TC New Englander, that was a year ago! Back surgery, PT!, old age, and all the usual distractions aside, I can finally report some progress..! Two weeks ago, we finally got the rifle in my shop. Externally it...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Thanks Mad L, and to all of you folks with great ideas over the past week or so. I'll have to badger my friend into choosing one or more, and start the cleaning / derusting process. We will post some feedback and hopefully pictures of the progress on cleaning up his 54cal. Happy 2024 to...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Although it won't work for rifles, I have used several of those flex hones laps to polish the forcing cones or chokes on old BP shotguns. Or even the entire bore! They come in various sizes and grit types. They look like a Teazel, keep them oiled and they are great for shotguns or smoothbores...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

That's a nice "2.0 minute of Deer" Rifle! My buddy who's gun I asked about, is reading this thread, he saw the comment about a 58 cal rebore... Danger Wil Robinson, Danger! This forum is dangerous, too many good ideas, and too many distractions! As for time, I'm retired, and need to...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

A few hundred times, did you alternate arms? A BP workout! I have an odd 13 gauge ML BP shotgun, a tight 12…Damascus stubb, fluted barrels, possibly Scandinavian, I had to remove 150 years of ‘crud”… Scotchbrite, 0000 wire wool, and Kroil helped… It’s rough, but goes bang when needed...

Asking for a friend... Rusty bore issue?

Hi B.K. I googled the rifle after looking at it at my buddies home. The breech plug is odd, rounded and asymmetrical… that lead me to more postings with folks offering to buy the old TC supplied tool. Alas, that’s no longer an option… but, as I have a lathe, and a mill, and many more toys, so...
