    Forensic Identification for Flintlock Remains

All of it are original equipment. Lol. We suspect the nut (not me) was a possible field repair with the local blacksmith.

I agree. The vinegar would be for the inside of the barrel. I had hoped to possibly plug the touch hole and fill it up, leaving the outside untouched. In theory this would gently remove the rust from inside. In theory… ☺️

Thanks. It’s an intriguing gun full of mystery. I don’t think actually shooting it would be as much fun as all the research. I’ve decided to look for a used American stock if I can find one to buy. Not in a hurry tho.

The lug lines up with the pin flanges on the bottom where it connects into the stock.

I was considering a vinegar bath… not committed yet.

That’s an interesting thought too. But no, this is the only “marking” of its kind on the whole barrel. Someone had suggested that the tang may have been to keep the ram rod in place. That’s a question for the professionals! 😂

My luck is that all it would do is cuss. 😂

Just shy of .75”. My calipers are rubbish. Ha

    Forensic Identification for Flintlock Remains

This is a new discovery. As I was smoothing out the rust (cleaning), I came across this rectangle brass inlay. It’s located 13” from the breach on the right side. The top line is at 1:00 and the bottom is about 2:30 (clock times for orientation as if you’re looking down the fictional sight). The...

How do I even begin the search for locating a pan, frizzed, springs, etc? This is part that seems daunting to me. Haha

Just a way of saying it’ll never be fired again and made into a display of some kind. ☺️

Thanks for all the pics! The notion that it was cut down and even shaved back to a lower profile has never crossed my mind. Thats a big deal! The thumb plate is also a cool indicator. Your American plate is similar and mine looks like it would fall right between them in size as mine is a little...

Seems to have a bayonet tang and the sight is gone from the top.

Maybe, possibly, in time… I can find the missing bits to mount up together and display as part of what helped make America great the first time. Haha who knows! Thanks for the comment!

    Forensic Identification for Flintlock Remains

These are the pics I have of the remains of the butt end. It’s becoming more and more obvious that it was slammed against a tree or over someone’s head as the main fracture is right at the breach. Whoever was swinging it, was holding it by the barrel impacted just shy of the tang. OUCH! From...

    Forensic Identification for Flintlock Remains

For this shot I used a flashlight to highlight some areas and possibly show a little depth with the shadows. I didn’t see an x in my view though. Just putting this out there, I have no interest in trying to make this better than it is. It’s rough. I’m not looking to increase its value or...
