Spring loaded rear sight as standard?

I guess part of my question is that the spring loaded sight is an unusual design for a hunting rifle. How did they so universally settle on that, if they were going to select a modern design anyway?

Spring loaded rear sight as standard?

Why is it that the chunky spring loaded rear sight, screwed into the barrel, is the default on modern production traditional muzzleloaders and muzzleloader barrels? This sight design is not traditional, and seems more expensive and less robust than a rear sight with an elevator, like the...

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

That is the other option. It's cleaner if I could find the right one, but maybe they don't exist.

    Davis Deerslayer needs fitting?

I'm learning that the elves will get you most of the way there, but each gun is like a snowflake.

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

Thanks, I was able to find one of those at the hardware store. It was also my positive confirmation on 8-32. I'll keep looking for the slotted/pos stop. I might end up having to make one...

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

Nice score on the 3-56!! Bizarre size. My Ace does not have such a thing unfortunately.

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

Does he have a website, or do I just call? I can't find his site.

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

It is not counterbored, I need a head that sits pretty flat.

WANTED Slotted 8-32 with positive stop

My TC hawken has the third hole drilled in the tang for a peep sight. I'm not using a peep right now and I can't find a filler screw. It is threaded 8-32, and I'd like to find one with a positive stop (head wider than the screw threads) if they are out there. Does anyone have one in a drawer...

    Davis Deerslayer needs fitting?

Well I got antsy tonight and drifted out the front pin from the side shown to remove the trigger. I took .070" off that blade with a file and then brought it to a mirror with a couple grits on a knife sharpening stone. There's about .100" of take up in the trigger before it engages the bar on...

    Davis Deerslayer needs fitting?

I purchased a Davis Deerslayer trigger for my pre-warning T/C Hawken. I did the stock inletting and the trigger fits in the stock nicely without any bind. I set the set screw per the T/C manual while the trigger was out of the gun. This was to screw the set screw in until the set trigger...

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

Yes! Thanks for the starting point. What you outlined was pretty much my plan, except I was going to use an press instead of a c-clamp. I'm not going to de-breech the gun until I have to, because that fit is perfect right now. I'm going to start by taking the .020" bow out that I can measure...

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

Yuck! I can't believe that thing left the plant like that. How far did you have to cut to see that? It must have been as ways if it was not visible at the muzzle.

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

Do you have any guidance on how much deflection I need to get a measurable set? In enginnerd talk: how much deflection do I need to apply to get to plastic deformation? There are tons of variables here, but is it .010", or more like .100"? Just looking for a conservative starting point. I...

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

*** Update *** I put the barrel on a proper datum today and found that it is .020" out of straightness, in the expected direction, and biased towards the muzzle. Measuring either side was the same (opposite directions), so I think the straightness problem is real, and not just a defect in the...

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

Round ball for now. I might try conicals if I ever draw my preferred elk permit.

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

That is also something I hadn't thought of. The breech plug to barrel fit is really nice and I don't have the impression that the finish had been redone, but I will consider this going forward. (The yellow tubing over the nipple is a piece of tygon fuel line for dry fire practice.)

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

I'm a mechanical engineer, so I'm familiar with machining processes and have access to granite blocks and measurement instrumentation at work. Our workplace is filled with shooters and hunters, so I get no gas for bringing in gun parts over lunch break.

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

SDS, thanks for so much detail, and a more scientific at-home approach. Do you find the 60deg chamfer to be optimal? It currently appears to be 45deg.

TC barrel windage out by 20 MOA

Some research on MLF says the easy way to clean those burs up is my thumb and some 220 grit. Is that still the recommendation?
