    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

A question for the North American members. Is it common or accepted practice on your locality to poke the Eastern Grey Dreys, Then shoot them as they emerge/flush? I'm guessing not, but it's fairly common in the UK when the leaves are off the trees, purpose made poles are available.

    Traditional M/L Guns from India

I've seen this on saleroom. It's not so pretty or impressive as most of the guns in this thread. But I've not seen a centrally mounted lock before. Has anyone come across one like this before...

    William Moore Tubelock

Hi Feltwad. I see that one end of your tubes is clearly crimped. What's going on at the other end? Are they sealed off ?

    William Moore Tubelock

Overall the gun weighs 7lb 13 oz. barrels are 4lb 12 oz. Idk why but I was expecting it to be light like an early 20th century English game gun.

Capandball makes tubes at 6 minutes in the above video. Using brass foil and roll of caps for toy cap guns. I expect I'll need to experiment with sizes. How does the saying go? 'We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they would be easy'

    William Moore Tubelock

I have purchased but not yet collected a (notionally) 12 bore Tubelock. i'm rather pleased and want to share Auction description as follows 'William Moore percussion tubelock side by side double barrelled sporting gun with named and engraved lock, engraved scenes of dogs to the trigger guard...

Just got a pedersoli side by side 12 gauge

If you have some scrap barrel lengths they can be sharpened up to make a punch, or a rotating cutter if the barrel wall is thin. Probably easier to just buy one tbh, but if we wanted to do things the easy way we'd be in a different forum I think. I've had decent results with a square load in...

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Hi Yellowhammer. My kitchen scales say 7 lb 6 oz. Barrel is 33 inches end to end and 32 inches from ignition point to muzzle Ive seen 12 bore versions, and I think there's also a .58 rifled model by zoli, but I've no idea how much those weigh.

Caucasian Miquelet "Cossack" Pistol & Locks

At the risk of asking a stupid question, do these locks have a separate frizzen spring or does the main spring do double duty?

Zoli 8 bore 'Zouave' 120 grains henry krank medium bp and 2oz of no.5 I'd have done just as well or better with my pedersoli 12bore SxS, but I've not used the 8 bore much and it is rather a lot of fun

    English Squirrel Stalking

Smart, trainable, reasonably well behaved but needs a firm hand and will take a mile if given an inch. She's soft mouthed and won't shake a squirrel like a JR would, so she gets nipped by squirrels sometimes. She goes beating and is reasonably willing to enter thick cover but not as keen as...

    The powder ran out first...

I was at the range the other day with my 8 bore and noticed that if I put a slit in edge of my thin card to try and let the air out, it seemed much less likely to turn.

    English Squirrel Stalking

Went out again yesterday with 4 legged help this time. A borrowed black lab - jack russel cross. Pitched up at 9 and got rained on till about 11:30. Then spent the rest of the day in full sun. Saw two squirrels but no shooting so changed woods at about 12:45. Had my first squirrel on the...

Questions regarding an England and Scotland trip in 2025

Nothing wrong with cabbage. NeedFried cabbage is worth a look. My Brother is very fond of fried cabbage with pheasant breasts cut into strips, breaded, spiced, and baked. Keeps the meat nice and moist

    English Squirrel Stalking

We don't have the same history of eating squirrel that you do in the States. We tend to shoot them for pest control and forrestry management. There have been recent moves to try and popularise squirrel meet but it's still more of a recent 'trendy london restaurant' sort of thing. I normally...

    English Squirrel Stalking

Inspired by Britsmoothy's smoothbore thread I decided to try squirrel stalking with my muzzle loading pedersoli 12 SxS near Newbury in Berkshire. I beat on the estate during the Pheasant season and the gamekeeper is very good to me and gives me as much squirrel shooting as I want. I poke the...

Questions regarding an England and Scotland trip in 2025

I would argue that curry has been encorporated into our national cuisine for a while now, and French fine dining has had a big influence at the higher end of things, to the extent that we now have English fine dining. But yes, there are a lot of places to eat not very exciting food. None of it...

    Traditional M/L Guns from India

Hi Rick. I've had a bore light and the ramrod down the barrel. I can confirm that mine is the common anti-chamber type, rather than the cylinder bore type. I'll chuck some semolina (wheat middlings) down it at some point to get an idea of chamber volume. As far as bore size goes, it won't quite...
